This is a picture of a mammoth tooth. My question is, how rare are these? This one was collected over 37 year ago.

They are not extremely rare but to find one is the goal of nearly every fosil hunter. I found a fragment of one and was tickled pink. Depending on size and quality hey will bring $100 and up......way up.

I'm not sure where it came from. It belong to my wife's father and he died in 1972, that's why I know it's over 37 years ago. They lived in IA, AZ and CA but I don't know if he picked it up on a trip either. The only reason I knew it was a mammoth tooth was the note with the instructions to apply clear shellac to it as soon as possible. This looks like it's could be a full tooth, is that the case? Or is this a part of the tooth? Not my area of study, I'm a computer analyst. LOL, I just looked online. I have it upside down.

I'm feeling guilty for leaving it out in a box in the garage in MN. My wife would comment, "You left the poor thing out in 60 below". She came to MN the year we set a record low temp, from CA desert and she's still here.
