This is cut #1 though some Zebra Marble. Cut #2 Sodalite. Cut #3 Red Tiger Eye It cut all 3 very well, there is a little bit of break off at the last of the cut but this acceptable to me. This saw will be for sphere preforms and not slabs. But clean cut otherwise.

Really good job on building it. Very expensive drive belt. I have found that Brass wing nuts work better than steel. Don't bind as much. Ken

Well done, 21. When you get a few more miles on it, let us know how the one-sided water feed is working out.

Most of the chop saws I have seen only have feed on one side. I guess it would be no problem to buy a t-fitting and split the line.

Just curious, 21. I’ve got a Lortone 14” drop saw and the oil feeds in through both sides of the blade guard. I’d expect more blade wear and drag on the ‘dry’ side if I only oiled one side, especially in deeper cuts.

Thanks for all the kind comments. I finally got to spend some quality time with my saw today. Made a couple jigs for sphere blanks. First one is a square jig so that a cube can be cut. Second pic is the corner cutoff jig. This is what I was able to do in a few hours of screwing around. 3 cubes and one sphere preform. Two of the cubes are Wendon Marble and the other is Florida rock. The preform is chocolate onyx.

That is very nice. You have done well. I plan to make one like this but in 20" to cut softer stone. Where did you get the arbor set up?

The arbor is just 2 5/8" pillow blocks, a piece of 5/8" cold rolled steel and a 5/8" blade arbor from a old shopsmith. Pillow blocks are about $9 a piece from Surplus Center. The shopsmith blade arbor can be found on eBay. Although I have seen them from lapidary suppliers also.

Great looking saw, I think it does its job very good. maybe if you remove those counter-weights and maybe add them to the other end, it could be a gravity feed saw.
The only thing I would care of is that the moisted wooden pieces could swell and change the geomery in time.

Nice setup! I might have to try and copy the design for my sphere preforms.

First off, great build! I've been thinking about making one like yours for the last few months.
I've got a couple of questions for you.
The metal pulleys one on the motor and one on the shaft - what is that called?
How are you controlling the motor? Just directly plugged in to the wall or is it a DC motor with motor controller? If so what kind of controller are you using?
The shaft you are using - what material is that just a steel rod or a proper axle of some kind?
The blade - what grit is it? Is it the type that has a diamond coating only at the edges or does it have diamond all across the surface of it as well as the edges?
How did your saw hold up over the last 2 years? Any modifications or issues?

Zapins, I just noticed the date on original posts. As far as the shaft it has to be "cold rolled steel". Also sold as "shaft stock". Round stock is not round really so won't work with bearings. Anyone building a drop saw currently, I just purchased the Gy-Roc "Preformer Saw" line and have been having fun modifying and playing with it. They used a 1/4" hose to a wye fitting reducing to 1/8" hose that hung down each side of blade. I was going to put copper tubing inside the hose so you could aim the hoses but then decided to use a 1/4" barb by 1/8" pipe 90 and thread into blade guard and dump water on blade towards front. It seems to work well and eliminates some of the inherent issues with tiny tubing.

John's spot on about the cold rolled steel. I first went with round stock from Lowe's for my Money Pit Tumbler and quickly found shafts wouldn't "fit" in the pillow-bearings. John and a couple more folks put me onto the fact that I need the more precise cold rolled steel. I found my shafts at Shaft Material at Metal Depot ....decent price and fast shipping. No connection to the company, just sharing my experience. Best wishes.
