I just picked up two pieces of equipment that are not homemade, but I'm going to have to mount them and supply motors for them. I figured this would be the best place to ask about motors!
One, an older (but basically brand new) Covington 10" saw says it needs a 1/3 hp, 1750 RPM motor.
The other, a older (but basically brand new) Crown Lapidary grinder would probably work with a 1/4 hp, 1725 RPM motor (could go heavier if need be).
I called a local appliance repair, and while they have motors they would sell, the guy I talked to thinks it might be a bit more complicated for me. I think what he meant was "You're a girl, and this will require you to do stuff." He pointed me in the direction of a furnace repair shop because their motors are "less complicated." Furnace repair shop says all motors we get are trashed (as in - they don't work).
I'm tempted to have my brother-in-law call about a used motor to see what kind of response he gets, but I think part of the problem was I didn't know the right thing to ask originally. My brother-in-law is less mechanically inclined than I am, so I'm guessing he won't know what to ask either.
So, what's the best type of motor to ask for? Would it be better to ask for a specific type of motor (say, a washing machine motor) or to ask for a motor by spec? Is there a "correct" way to approach the subject besides "this might sound strange, but do you have any spare used motors you would be willing to sell?"

There should be an 'electric motor repair shop' near you. They sell motors. You just ask for a 1/3 hp 1725 rpm motor. You have to know which way it turns also. When mounted is the pulley on the left or right and which way will it turn, clockwise or counterclockwise. Newer motors are not polarity reversable.(meaning you can't change direction of the way they turn). Hope this helps. Ken

Ask for 1/3 hp, resilient mount (will have a "cradle mount" and motor clamps down in the mount), 48 frame (1/2" shaft) or 56 frame (5/8" shaft). 115 volt. Be careful if a furnace motor that it doesn't say "continuous air over". Those use the furnace blower air for cooling the motor windings. "Continuous duty" would be a good thing. 1725 rpm and reversible by switching red and black leads would be convenient.

By the way, the appliance guy is right. Washing machine and dryer motors can have really weird mounts and multi speed wiring to deal with.

LOL - it wasn't just him virtually patting me on the head? Ken, I'll see if I can find something that fits that category. There's nothing local that I can find, but I'm sure there's something up in the KC area. The trick is to find it where they still charge you used prices for it up there.

Hey Ronda:) Son is almost finished with my flat lap and he used a 1/4 motor off a vacuum cleaner. He is building it completely out of things he got free or almost free. The motor, the aluminum discs he is making out of scrap metal he got for really cheap. Of course he has this metal gear lathe he bought for lots of money but he is making me a "free flat Lap" to justify buying that lathe. LOL I called him and he said look for a paper shredder, or treadmill or vacuum cleaner or scroll saw or drill press. He suggested posting an ad on craigslist and say you dont want to pay any money for it especially if they are broken, but you will haul it away. He said drive around on trash day and look for vaccum cleaners and stuff with motors put out with the trash. He said many times the motors are fine they got rid of it for something else. I will look for you around Kansas City Ronda. I got signed up for the metalsmithing Saturday class starting 1/23. Are you taking it this time?

Ronda, you might try a swimming pool store. 1 1/2 & 2.0 hp are the most common, but they should have or can order 1/3 hp. Easy wiring, even a guy can do it.....

Saturday class?!? I completely missed that one! I had thought the evening one was the only one I could make, and I missed enrollment on that one. I'm picking up a couple at the Lawrence Arts Center instead, including a . Maybe I'll catch a summer session at JCCC. Now, back to the motor. I have a line on a person that fixes things on the side. We'll see what he has in his shop!

yes, as mentioned above, continuous duty is important. also, single phase, and it is best to have totally enclosed fan cooled (TEFC). the cradle mount is best, but the 56C type of foot plate is OK too. I found some surplus online for about $60, but then there was shipping. I also found some on ebay for less, but it was not TEFC and it was not clear that the capacitor was present and wired. In the end, I got a Grizzly motor from amazon.com for $79. The one from Harbor Freight was $10 cheaper, but not in the Topeka store, so there would be shipping. I really like the Grizzly motor it is made for table saws and such. They already have the capacitor wired in and you just have to connect two wires. www.amazon.com/Grizzly-G2527-Motor-Single-Phase-1725/dp/B0000DD15G/ref=pd_cp_hi_2

Also try www.Surpluscenter.com and eBay. Found one on eBay 1/3hp 1725 rpm motor for 30 bucks and the guy happened to be local. Try looking in the phone book for surplus dealers, alot of these motors are used in garage door openers (big doors). Harbor Freight is ok and so is Northern Tool although they will charge you more.

I'd try another heating place. With all the people putting in high efficiency furnaces nowdays they always have some old ones you can get a motor out of. They probably just didn't want to bother with you. Furnace motors really are simpler than appliance motors though.

That's what I tried today - a smaller heating place. Well, a heating, plumbing place. The secretary took my name and number and is going to ask the bosses what to do. She didn't quite get that I wanted to buy a used motor off of them; she thought I wanted them to come install a used motor in my current furnace!
We'll see if they call me back...

You might look for a Locke Supply or Johnstone Supply in KC.

Thanks! He still has 4 available, and if he can wait until next week, I'll be picking up at least one. The heating guy finally called me back today and thinks he has one as well, so I'm waiting to hear back from him first (besides, the heating guy is going to give me the one he finds for free!).

You must talk nicer than me. The heating place here will give me a motor for free but I gotta get it out of the old furnace myself. Sounds like your set.

He has two left now. I did not know he was down to 4 and I had emailed on Fri about getting two.
They are well worth it. Not completely TEFC, but enclosed enough - and there is a built in switch.
He said he migh keep one for himself, but if you talk nice and look sad I think he would sell you both.
