This has absolutely nothing to do with lapidary, tumbling, or rock at all. Anyhow, I built this the weekend before last. Now, just what is it? Woody

It's a bench for a Wheelwright . Spelling ? You sit on it while you shape the spokes that are clamped in the upright jaws.

Haven't a clue, will follow this thread to see what it is. I liked your setup of tools at the back.

I've seen this before... Hmmm... is it for spinning wool? Don't think that's right though, is that beeswax on the left front top of the stool?

Is it a barber's chair? Or a vet's?

Now I figured out, it's a vertical vice, that leather belt can be tensionned by foot.

Simon got it! It is a harness stitch horse, for sewing leather. A saddlers horse is very similar, but the clamp is open all the way to the bench so a larger piece can be worked on. The clamp opens by releasing the tension on the belt, and closed by steping on, and locking the belt. The leather to be sewn is clamped tight, and at a comfortable height, and angle to be worked on. Saddlers, leatherworkers, harness makers sew with two needles, and a waxed thread. This tool leaves both hands free. Woody

Adrian. Yep, you need the extra pressure to stretch the saddle leather before you sew it together. Wow! I didn't know there was a difference in the two types of vice. Only see them in antique shops around here..Mel

Well, first glance I was going to say a berthing chair but it doesn't have a hole in it, next thought was along Amber's train of thought and now, I am just not sure at all...Beautiful workmanship though! Fran

I was too late. It is a harness stitch horse, and not the horse that wears the harness. We have one at the ranch. We have a saddle one also. And they look almost the same. Used to do the same thing, sewing leather. Tom & Debby
