I got my package of rainbow obsidian, now I need to know how to cut this stuff to get the colors from it! Kim mentioned that BearCreek had instructions, but I haven't seen him here for ages it seems. Anyone know how to do this? The pieces aren't very big to start with so I'd hate to waste them with mistakes. HELP PLEASE!

Thanks Kim, but I'm still not sure I understand what that means - my pieces are pretty small, so I'm not very willing to start cutting cubes out of it! - I'll have to play it by ear I guess

Tweet What Bear is saying is you want to find HOW the color runs and try to cut Parallel (sp) to the color- the cube thing is for a big chunk- you cut a small section off then cut it into a cube so you can view it from all angles- with the smaller chunks you hve you want to try to find the color band and cut along side it (not to close) The general idea is to have the color band along the top of the cab (especially if it is a flat top) If you hold the obsidian up to the light (the brighter the better) you may be able to pick up the banding- tyr it dry first- then if need be wet it-

From what I seen you want to find the lines ,where the color lies. Then cut at 40 to 45 degree angle to those lines...like slicing a layer cake but sharply angled (?). This is hard to explain! good luck!..

I don't like to rain on someone elses parade, but the first edge shot he showed and talked of 40-45 degree angle, my lifes work doing machine work told me he is guessing at the angle and is way off. I was told years ago to cut rainbow obsidian at 31-33 degrees from parallel with the layers. I paused the video at 5:25 minutes and read 24 degrees with my protractor held to the rock, and the picture on full screen. At 5:49 I read 40-42 degrees,he's talking greater than 45, and at 8:57 27 degrees. Someone wants to check me, please do. The 31-33 angle off of parallel with the layers I was told, and I do, is supposed to show the maximum number of layers without stretching them out and reducing the number of layers showing, think fanning a deck of cards. This idea is a given that the color layers are fairly uniform in thickness, some are, some are not, the ones in the video look pretty good to me.
