Went out hiking with a friend last Friday to see if all my research last winter was worth the effort. Iwas looking for the location of the Centrosaurus bone bed that was announced last summer. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/story/2010/06/17/dinosaur-graveyard.htmlI believe I found it. Can't wait to get back there and do more exploring this spring and summer. I did a few hours of Goggling skin and only found pictures of skin impressions. No pictures of actual skin attached to bone. The impressions look alot like what i found. Back side with pores and bone. Goggle Earth shot of Prairie Coulees Natural Area My friend found a bone that was about 6 inches in dia. But the siltstone was just to hard to deal with limited tools. Dale

That's very neat! I'm wondering if the skin would replace or rot away leaving an area for a cast to form outside the bone? How are your laws there? Can you take it to someone to examine?

Best way to find the ID would be to find a University with some paleontologist...They will ID anything you have...Good luck.

I hate to be a spoiler, but I believe the piece you have found is a fragment of turtle shell. I have collected a lot of pieces whilr searching in dinosaur fossil beds, and they are very common. Your piece shows all the typical characteristics of turtle shell. Here is a link to a photo of some pieces from various species found in the dino beds: www.scn.org/~bh162/turtcroc.jpg

A friend in NC has some pieces of fossil turtle skin or shell that look very much like the same patterns you have there. It may be worth looking at.

Thanks for posting the Hadrosours. The area this came from is also well know for Hadrosours fossils to. Did more research and found this on the Nat. Geo website. I just might have some skin after all.
