Ok trying this again. To get the pictures right. It's a new build. Some new parts some old parts. Six foot long, up on a shelf. And insulated for winter. The PVC barrel will hold 20 lbs of rock. The tumbler will hold three of them and one B barrel. The B is doing about 33 rpm the PVC is doing about 42 rpm. Axles are 5/8 with heater hose for traction. Had to use a extra pair of bearings in the middle because of the 5/8 shaft but didn't have any bigger on hand. Used 1-1/2 foam board for all the walls, ends, bottom, and doors. A light bulb will keep them from freezing in the winter. The reducer end of the pvc is a different diameter than the end cap by a few thousand I think. I never would of thought that buying them. Both for the same size pipe. It makes it drift real slow the length of the axle. Takes about two hours no matter which way we flip the barrel. So stuck a little roller caster on the end. Put the whole thing up on a shelf in the shop. Wanted it out of the way. Mounted the motor on the shelf under it. Found out right off what rocks and spinning pvc sound like. The doors on it cut it down to where you can live with it again. The pvc barrels are costing 16 dollars to make apiece. Didn't trust the thin rubber on the quik cap so cut and glued another piece in the end of it. Showing no thinning so far. I cut a piece of the pipe long ways so the curve would match into 1 inch strips. Glued three in one barrel for pick ups. Have one barrel with smooth walls. Am waiting till I have enough of the same rock for both to see which one does the best at rough rounding. The rocks are coming from ditches, creeks, and backyards. Have a lot to learn before we put any fancy rock in like you guys do. Thanks for all the ideas and help on this site. Attachments:

I'm guessing you leave the motor door open when running? Nice job.

Thanks John. Was fun building it for them. Yes it is open when ever it's on. If we are sanding or spraying it gets shut down and closed up. It's a CD but I think it would still get hot in that box closed up. With it open it runs just warm on the hand. Now something I sure didn't know or even think of. Those pvc barrels will feel just a tad warm with the doors on them closed. I guess from the friction of everything inside sliding on the walls. And no air movement around them. With the doors open they go back cool to the touch in a couple hours.

Allen the pipe is 6" sewer pipe. The fittings for it are a lot cheaper than sch 40 or 80. Both the end cap and reducer are glued on. The reducer is 4 x 6. So the opening is big enough for any rocks I want in it. I cut the pipe 10 inches for three of them and 11 inches for another, I should of left it at 10. There is between 15 and 20 pound of rock in each one. I have four spinning. But I didn't have a 1/4 or 1/3 horse motor that wasn't being used. So I stuck a spare 1/2 horse on. Overkill. If I have to pull that motor and buy a smaller one I will have to put a lot less rock in them barrels or make smaller ones. I had cut up a rain barrel so I have filler by the buckets. And it don't wear out. So if I have to go to less rocks I'm covered. The barrels are showing no wear inside or out. Yet, I have no idea how long they will last.
Well that's the size I cut them and why. It was all just guessing and reading what others had done on here. You will get better answers asking some of the pros on here.

Got them from Bearing World. They have free shipping which I'm sure has been added into the cost. Grainger was higher in price on them. All six have been running none stop and are cool to the touch, so I guess there ok for cheaper. stores.ebay.com/bearingworld?_trksid=p4340.l2563

Well been running six months non stop with four cheap PVC barrels. The only thing that has wore out was the heater hose I put on the shafts when first made. We have about 100 Lbs of smooth rounded rocks in 5 gal buckets built up. Thats including one little hot wheel car that got dropped in when my back was turned. It didn't fair well. Winter about here the grandkids won't want to get wet washing there rocks every week. So I think I'll order the pre polish and polish and see if I can make some shinny rocks through the winter.
