Hi, I am rockhound from Australia. I am mainly a rock carver but do enjoy the hunt for gems too.

Sorry I missed you Tammy. I do not carve anything harder than alabaster because I do not use any kind of power tools. Everything is done by hand.
Welcome Cookie. I am glad that you like my tutorial. I will be looking forward to seeing some of your carvings and I am sure a lot of others will too. Everyone here likes photos. Jim

Jim, thanks for the additional information and sending this over to me. I've chatted with Andrew about carving, on and off, since we picked up that large piece of soapstone at the show last month. Maybe he'll catch the bug with this tutorial.
Thanks Paul

Awesome tutorial Jim! I just noticed that this was started in 2011? I can't believe I missed such an awesome thread! I think it should be stickied too!

Hi, I am new to RTH & to rock carving. I am wondering how the beautiful Chinese sculpture (the top photo) was polished without damaging all the fragile areas of this amazing piece? what sort of tools / polishing methods / polishing devices were used? (certainly not a tumbler or vibrating rock polisher I'm guessing...). I am a tile installer & over the years i have done alot of edge profile polishing on pieces of stone tile (granite, marble, travertine, & others) & we always used a high speed 1100rpm angle grinder with round 4 inch PVA polishing pads.....seems pretty obvious that nothing like that was used to polish that beautiful sulpture (?)...... Thank you for any help
