I'll try it. I certainly have plenty to play with.

Woody, 30 grit sand is $5.61 a bag (50 lbs.). About $5 with a veteran's discount. Maybe not worth sieving/cleaning. The blow sand might be less aggressive and useful on more fragile things or aluminum.

Sorry folks. Work has been very busy. I have pictures of the items being in the bath for two weeks. I'll post them tomorrow. Scott

Here are a few pics after the molasses bath: Bases: If you look at the right bottom corner of the right base, you'll see a little rust. I brushed it with a wire brush and it came right off. I should have taken a post wire picture but I didn't. Shrouds: These came out super nice! I should have taken more pictures but you get the idea from the one picture. I am very pleased with the process. I don't think I will use anything else because it is cheap, environmentally friendly (as far as rust removing goes) and easy. People talk about the smell and messiness of molasses but I didn't find it bad on either account. I kept the tub of molasses mixture outside and I don't mind spraying down the items. It probably isn't for everybody but it suits my needs perfectly.

I learn something new every day. I never would have believed that molasses would remove rust. Thanks for sharing!

Vinegar works too, I have some parts soaking right now. Be careful with it though, i've heard maybe it's not the best for moving parts but I haven't had a problem yet. Really weird, all the rust foams to the top. I usually leave stuff in it 1-2 weeks. I think it would be ok on shrouds etc but like I said i've heard corrosion issues with moving parts so be careful.

I know a guy who used electricity to un-rust a bunch of metal parts. Used a battery charger as power source and a few hours all his tools were unrusted.
Molasses worked good too! Holy spice cookies it sure worked good.
