Thanks for chiming in, James. Tried the ice pick thing this morning-had to, in the interest of science, experimentation, and heck I hadn't made a big mess in the shop in a while. It actually did pretty much what I expected. Pushed the ice pick through the center of the rubber cap. Got a few bubbles and minor leakage, but that rubber is self healing and probably a little sludge helped plug the hole. So I guess the answer is that one would have to make a fairly large hole to keep the rubber from closing itself up, and by the time your hole is that big it'll probably make a mess.

Russ Sometimes the holes self seal and sometimes not Russ. The leaks at the glued joints surprised me though. Hard to say if the hole will open back up due to tumbling action. My leaks were on and off.

My thinking was that a small hole from a ice pick would be self healing and only open as pressure builds. One the pressure lets off the hole should close until the next time the pressure builds. Leakage should be minimal as the hole is small and there should not be too much actually touching that spot. I have not had any pressure issues with my regular tumbles so far and when I read your thread it gets my mind working which is why I comment... by the time I get to build the tumbler it should be pretty well worked out to where it is easier to handle.
