I had 1 piece of rainbow moonstone, I think that's the name, it was all white normally and a beautiful bright blue when it shown... It was a small cab I did in silver with an open spiral over the front of the stone giving it a look of the universe, appropriate for a moonstone in my book... anyways I sold it to a friend at the bar I go to on Saturday night, just before mothers day, and I awoke the next morning sad that it was gone.... I have no regrets for selling it, I do hope to be able to at least support this hobby with sales of what I create, but I still wish I had it... it was a fantastic display of cabbing & wrapping. I know there will be others I will feel that way about too, but again, I am happy it is going to a good home!!

There is a local cabber here, one of the best I've ever seen. He boasted to me that he has over Five Hundred cabs, and has never sold any(like that was a bad thing to do) I thought ,I'm sorry.................Hub

That's a nice one indeed but for me it is always about the reveal. I love cutting, watching the stone reveal itself to me. Once that is done I want to go to the next one. If I really like the cab I will put a price that will make it stay around for awhile but like all children they all leave home eventually.

I like to give.If a person expresses excessive interest in a particular item I can't help but give it to them. If they make a comment(s) later about owning that item down the road then i realy feel i scored. But that cab would have damaged my soul if i had to let go of it:) Does that help?LOL

Wow. I admire people who can let their favorites go... I have a REAL hard time with that. Guess I'm a hoarder:).

No, there are no hoarders in the rock world. We're called 'collectors' .. well, at least on ebay, we're in the 'Collectibles and Art' category. Right? Right?? ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

I recently wrapped a sodalite cab intended for a friend....as I was wrapping it I was regreting getting rid of it...It has allot of flash for a sodalite...as fate would have it the friend got another cab and my wife got the sodalite wrap....so it is still in the family !..lol....I have not sold any yet as I got into this hobby as a way to have personal gifts to give. Well , I am getting good enough at it that I am considering trying to sell some....not real sure where to begin though........

I know what you are feeling. Ever since a not so close friend who is a jeweler saw and purchased one of my cabs my wife has been after me to start to sell some of them. Just the other day she wanted me to sell this one. I now have it hidden just in case. LOL ![](http://i589.photobucket.com/albums/ss337/unclestu2u/volcano%20cab%202012/volcanoslab.jpg) ![](http://i589.photobucket.com/albums/ss337/unclestu2u/volcano%20cab%202012/DSCN1224.jpg) I know it is technically speaking not the best cab, but the subject is a one of a kind. That is an absolutely gorgeous cab of OJ! I can see why you hated to part with it. I have a few pieces that I would struggle with letting go of if I had to but I try not to get attached to objects. Over twenty-five years ago I used to do furniture restoration work for a locally well known southern antique dealer who had a pretty good perspective on the subject. He once told me something that I've though of many times over the years; "You can love things, but those things can't love you back". So I try to reserve my affections for living beings that can return them. That said, any idea where we an all get some more of that gorgeous OJ? ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

I used to collect other things and was somewhat anal about it. One day, I divided it all up between the kids and decided that the things could own them for awhile. Since then, I'm not so bad. I collect cabs, but I think I really only want to keep a tiny fraction of them. I could give them away tomorrow. There was a time that I couldn't say that. I got that OJ on ebay a long time ago. I had the thinnest tiny slabs of it and it is just about gone. ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png)

Tela, Awesome OJ cab! I'm in the same boat. Sometimes when I sell pieces at shows, I tell the buyer that I'll miss the cab, wrap, or pendant & ask if they'll pose for a picture wearing the piece.
I've sold the pendant off my neck 3 times at shows. Of course people realize that the one I'm wearing is usually the most expensive one. Lynn

I like that cab!!!!... the whole volcano look is not something that you get very often!! I wouldn't blame you for keeping it, but it is also great subject matter and would help fetch a premium over a similar piece without the visual appeal!!

Beautiful cab Tela. I would have trouble getting rid of that cab too. I have put the price on some of my stuff that I want to hang on to high enough that it will be worth it to me to get rid of.

I'm of the belief that if you cannot give away or sell something that you own, then that thing owns you.
Now, that being said, I'm obsessive and compulsive and a hoarder. I have 3000 books in storage and 50 + buckets of rocks in my garage.
Those books own me. Many are worth a good deal of money - so I can't just give them away - and some are very rare - so I can't just replace them. But they have no function right now - I can't easily read them and they are not even decorating a wall in my house. So what true value do they actually have right now? Answer - they cost me $80 a month in storage fees. Multiply that by 7 years (the age of my daughter whose room used to be the library...) and suddenly their value is a liability.....but I can't seem to get rid of the core collection. I hope to have my library back one day, but there is no guarantee... Hence "Obsession begins where common sense ends."
My rocks are my current obsession - when work allows. My core collection here are several hundred displayable pieces for the 4-5 shows I do a year. My focus is having an overview of agate regions across the US and the world. (here my babbling actually will directly relate to the subject of this post) If I only have one or two samples of a region, I have a hard time giving (hardly ever sell) away items. BUT I will often give away a finished piece as that forces me to dig into my rough and try to produce another specimen that surpasses what I currently have or had. I also like to rotate my specimens, and giving away parts of my collection forces me back to the wheels to grind out new stuff. I also know that a valued gift to an interested person can create a new rockhound from someone who had no clue about our hobby. It's always fun to see a person's face light up when they see what's hiding in this dusty ol' rocks of ours.
As for rough, that's my potential. I'll give away good pieces to good homes, and if somebody appreciates some material, I might gift them a couple pieces of uncut stuff. But again, I always want those 1-4 pieces available to work on if I give away something. For nodule specimens, I keep 100's of them per site because you're never guaranteed a perfect innard.
My only other comment is that I believe that what you give away comes back to you in greater amounts. I gave Woody a large whalebone and chunk of Stone Canyon a few years ago when I took him to the Cady's. Within two weeks I was invited to an estate sale and got a larger chunk of both items - for free... Doesn't mean you always get back the same, or that you should expect something to land in your lap (that would turn the 'gift' into a 'trade for a player to be named later.') But I get a nice feeling when I let something go, and I always say thanks when something unexpected winds up in my lap.
Sorry for my mutterings. Hope I said something interesting.
Lowell
