Armadillos were around when I was a kid,but a population explosion occurred. My dad had a Farmall C tractor with the front wheels on a single stem. After breaking several off by hitting unseen armadillo holes,we declared war on them. One 2 week Christmas vacation,I'd go out and kill 6-8 a day.Vultures stayed on our place around a waterhole,no reason to search far.

Pat, are you tracking the squirrel's weight? How is he/she doing?

My wife was first in Fulton county an armadillo. The county agent laughed at her(20 years ago). Now they are everywhere. I saw them around Warm Springs 60 miles south starting 15 years ago at
my friends hunt camp. Sound like a herd of buffalo coming thru the forest. Bad for sound hunting situation.

How is the baby today Pat? I saw where a fox squirrel was a pet for 18 years (according to internet story).
My only neighbor thru the woods at my Florida camp feeds the squirrels out of his hand. They visit me for goodies too. He has them named.
I had to live in Ottawa Canada on business for 6 months and most of the squirrels were tame. They would pull on your pants leg. Too funny.
And the ones here in Atlanta are very shy. Looking forward to photos.

I love that this squirrel shops at Banana Republic and wears a small sized sweater. Pat is she feeding the moistened dog food yet? If not, she will be glad when she does. It's beginning to look like a Beechey ground squirrel. Color and tail configuration. Image from someone else on flickr

@shotgunner This is what she says about feeding the squirrel dog food: Aaaahhhhh ! No, no, no, no! Squirrels are vegetarian ! Dog food and cat food contain meat and eggs. The squirrel might not die right away, but it will eventually have seizures and possibly also eventually lose the ability to use its back legs. He's a grey squirrel. I read up on his diet mostly on this site: users.hal-pc.org/~jbsum/squirrel.html#RecBabThe person who wrote it comes off as a know-it-all and I'm not crazy about her style, but what she says makes sense and it's true that wildlife refuges will lie and tell you to feed your squirrel something that will actually kill it, as I found out from my co-worker who watched his four baby squirrels die after following the advice of the one he called. When he called back they admitted they had deliberately caused him to poison his squirrels, because it's illegal for a private person to try to take care of them. They will also try to persuade you to bring them your squirrel, and then they feed it to some recovering hawk, falcon or owl.

So you will just feed him scalded milk and keep him in your tender loving care?
I love the way the govt takes over. Who are they to tell you what to do!
If i was a baby squirrel i would want to be under your care more than 10 government employee's care.

That's a shame.
That data on the feeding habits of squirrels is mistaken. I have seen squirrels kill reptile and amphibians in community enclosures. Plenty of food available and they killed all the lizards frogs and toads!

@shotgunner, Daughter says the websites give contradictory information, and the government agencies that she has seen recommend actions with devastating effects.
In the end, you have to choose. So she did and he is thriving. If he quits thriving, she'll change his diet.

You may want to contact Johnno and Kat over on Meteorite Junction. They rescued and raised a baby squirrel years ago. They may be able to give you some tips.

jamesp I've requested an update. Hope to get it today. vegasjames Thanks for the contact. I've sent that as well. She was going to compare the size of her squirrel to that of some of the photos on squirrel sites to see if he is growing at the normal rate. He looks healthy externally. She checks this thread periodically, and is happy about all the helpful interest.

jamesp Wait no longer! Here is a 6 second video of the baby squirrel: eyes open and crawling. Very interested in exploring. I suspect her cat is also very interested! vine.co/v/h5O1LEhzMnH
