Thank you. the entity's own design. - Continuously variable speed (100 - 1800 rpm) - rotation reversing - Cooling water pump - 110/220 V (switchable inverter) - 370 w power - Emergency automatic stop (overload, overheating, etc.) - Quickly interchangeable grinding laps - Easy to clean bowl

"I'm thinking about installing a latch that will slide up against the shaft extender to stop the bolt from rotating for tightening or removing the nut and disk." ... and a few years later I see this end lap project and want to ask: Did you ever get round to making this latch device, 1dave? I am planning to make a flat lap too. So I have a few questions. One is to ask how would I hold the motor spindle as I tighten up the top nut when changing discs. I see you have a 3/4" spanner tucked away underneath. This was my first thought too, then I thought of some other device to jam the spindle. I might build mine with the drain tray raised a little, exposing the spindle extension. And I'd arrange to have two flats put in it right there. So that locking the motor spindle and removing a disc is all done above benchtop height.

My other question is whether to use a 3-phase motor and run it on single phase with a Variable Frequency Driver (VFD). I could alter the speed a little, get it to start up softly, and stop fast.
The motors I'm looking at have vertical mounts and roller bearings each end, so I am assuming it'll take some downward force.

No, sorry, I never did.
IF I ever get back to it, I need to cut in a door on the front and turn the CD holder around so I can access my other laps without having to turn the unit around.

Just wanted to say, almost a decade after this was posted and it’s still helping adventurous rock maniacs like me build the flat lap that won’t break the bank. I’m using the infamous $80 skil tile saw with a Foredom variable speed control foot pedal. Yes I am aware I might blow out the motor or electrocute myself but hey at least I’ll be enjoying my hobby when the reaper comes. Thanks, 1dave!
