Here is one called "dragon skin damascus". Most likely it's ball bearings of various types of steel forge welded into a billet

Never have seen such patterns. So unusual. It would make sense to cut those into 'cabs' with a plasma cutter using oval, tear drop and other shaped cutting guides. Leaving a clean minimal finish cut edge. Then grind the face minimally to play w/the layers. I would spot weld it to a stick temporarily like waxing a cab to a stick to enhance your grinding pleasure. I'll take cab out of that any day. I see potential biker jewelry(probably done) using damascisized chains, bearings , nuts, bolts etc. Jean has a treadle hammer...

James, oops, I was wrong about that. I don't have a treadle hammer. Was going to get one, guess we never did. Too many tools to keep track of... I have a small 2 ton punch press. Looks like this one
With dies in it, you can still texture metal.
Love this Damascus blade
But it can't compare to the ones that Scott posted. They remind me of something made from Fimo clay. But a whole lot of beating and heating going on!

All we need is aircraft hangers and money enough to fill them with tools! And the time to use them. Well... Two different schools of thought for this issue. If we can afford an aircraft hanger and to fill it with tools then we: A) are wealthy and have time to have such toys or B) are starting a business and the cash flow from the business will sustain us. So we should all get wealthy or start a business! lol I am sure Jean will have insight into the machining business.

That's funny! Bob works at shop in an aircraft hanger at a local small airport, he is a CNC machinist - BUT, he works for someone else, putting money in their pocket. So, the key is to have the funds to buy your own tools and machinery, the know-how to use them, and go to work for yourself! Unfortunately, this political climate - and ensuing sucky economy - is not conducive to starting a small business right now. Permits, fees, licenses, now employee health care. They don't make it easy. Can see why some many small business owners have just given up, or moved operations out of state, or even across the border.
One thing that I lack, is the sales skills. That has always been a part of running a business that I absolutely abhor!! I don't deal with certain customers well.

C) you really like vintage American made machinery and cannot pass up on opportunity to purchase a machine when it comes on the market even if you do not have a product in mind or worse yet you already own tht machine.

Just one of the "vintage American made" machines residing in my garage: An old Bridgeport manual mill with DRO

This machine has cut some metal in it's life, still going strong.

That is a cool machine. I'd love to learn how to work/machine/mill/etc. metal, but as has been intimated, who has the time?
