From www.internetstones.com/topaz-azul-8225-carats.htmlUsing nuclear radiation and heat treatment to increase the blue color in sapphire. Hmmmmm, a nuclear reactor??? Characteristics of the gemstone. Did you cut this Scott? The world’s largest and finest star rose quartz The gemstone that weighs an enormous 5500 carats is a spherical cabochon-cut, star rose quartz, with a rich pink color, good translucency and a perfect centrally placed six-rayed star, with distinct rays extending towards the girdle of the stone. The gemstone seems to contain the optimum quantity of rutile, that gives a perfect and distinct six-rayed star, without interfering with the translucency of the stone. The slight silky undertone visible in the stone is caused by rutile. The cut and polish of the stone is also perfect. Thus this extraordinary and unique gemstone combines the rare features of excellent color, good translucency and well defined star, making it the largest and finest star rose quartz in the world. In the Michael Scott collection the star rose quartz is mounted on a silver sculpture designed by the Seattle-based silversmith, John Marshall. All features in this gemstone are so perfect that at a glance it may be mistaken for a star ruby with pinkish overtones such as the Sri Lankan star rubies, which are also famous for their well-defined stars. Its only the massive size of the gemstone that may give rise to doubts about it being classified as a star ruby, because as a rule, rubies of gem-quality cannot grow to such enormous sizes.

Wish there was a chunk of star rose quartz at the Hogg Mine in LaGrange GA. I have seen several star cabs cut from the Hogg Mine but this was about 45 or 50 years ago. The first mine I ever rock collected in was the Hogg Mine. I was only 10 years old at the time. I wish I knew then what I know now about the Hogg mine. I may have found some nice beryl crystals !

Freezing in the High Georgia Winds, Frankie I went there 30 years ago Frankie. I got 2 pieces that are egg sized in the tumbler right now. Last of my oooold stock. I had a dozen baseball sized with hardly a fracture. Gave em away. So you got your Geology career started there? I see why. I never saw roads paved in solid gem grade pink rose quartz till i walked in to that place. They mined the beryl to make beryllium metal to line canon barrels for WW2. Did you know that ?

Mr James ! I know that the beryl was mined for the government but did not know about the cannon barrels. Very Interesting ! There has been UFO's seen around the Hogg Mine. There was even hairs found from an alien in one of the mining trucks. You know aliens need beryllium ore for their space crafts ! The hairs were sent for analysis and they turned out to be black bear hair ! ! They think the bear had rummaged thru the truck looking for left overs.

It's 19 and dead calm here Frankie.
Too bad we could not have an alien visitation. After looking at the exotic uses of beryllium in Wikipedia i was overwhelmed. It can give some people berylliosis, a deadly allergy-go figure...
If there is a metal the aliens would be looking for it would be a great start.
Happy T-Giving Day to you and yours Jamesp

Not star patterned but at Tucson you can find rose quartz spheres a couple of feet diameter. I would like to see how they cut them but guess they are done on single cups.

Or maybe Mexico. Somewhere where labor is cheap.

A sphere that large would take some serious pre grinding.

And they ended back where they began! How did they put all those pieces back together? If they had a director and better editor this is good for an academy award.
