That is a start switch. It opens when the motor starts to disconnect the start windings. You lucked out.

Motor start capacitors are fairly cheap, $10-$20, if its a faulty capacitor (easy). Switch gear can be impossible to replace on ancient motors, but often its just dirty contacts. getting someone to look at it might cost more than a new motor though, around $100 or so for a new motor. Its really only feasible these days to repair something like that if you are doing it yourself and you need to know what you are doing, It'd be sad to kill yourself to save $100. Edit. Good to see you got it fixed, those old guys are getting rarer and rarer, most wont touch old stuff.
