I've never heard of Grape agate from this area called Stromatolites. They seem to form in blobs of highly silicated "grapes". Sometimes the grapes form as separate units, not attached to anything. They max out at about 1/4". There is no indication that they broke off from a host blob, but are whole grapes. They don't form in layers like the Stromatolites I've cut. Solo es mi opinion. Lynn Lynn, you got me thinking. I wish I could still get out and about so I could return to that area with a 1/2" screen to search for Stromatolite small parts from their breakup.

We followed Dave's map and had a fun, successful time collecting at Greasewood. We found some very nice display pieces, mostly broken. There were a couple of large holes that had been dug with nice scraps laying around. I would love to see what they took! My friends went off about a 100 yards from us and found some larger pieces, no whole Stromatolite, though. If we're back in that area we'll roam further out, the road was very sandy in places, if you go be careful. Quite a few like this:

Lynn, you told me about collecting here when we met you in Moab. It took a couple of years but we made it.

Thanks for the bump 1dave! If stuck in the sand deflate your tires to 5 or 10 psi you can drive right out and to the nearest air pump. Learned in at OBX

Are you going to tumble them? I've tumbled this material and don't recommend it because it breaks apart too much. I have enough of this material to send to a few people, so if anyone wants a good deal just PM me.

Thanks for the bump 1dave! If stuck in the sand deflate your tires to 5 or 10 psi you can drive right out and to the nearest air pump. Learned in at OBX I got my wife's van stuck in the sand at the Swell. Deflating the tires would not have helped in that situation, as the bottom of the van was sitting on sand. I had to dig sand out from under the entire van before I could move it. You should have seen my blue jeans turned red as the local dirt! Lynn

I was a white skinned northerner when my parents came to visit me in NC. We headed for Ocracoke Island in a rented 4 wheel drive pickup. Ventured out onto the beach and bogged right down, in 4WD! Then another pickup came around us driving as easy as pie. They stopped and handed us a cheap tire gauge, said “5 psi” and sailed on. Then we understood the long lines at the gas station air pumps.

Wow that’s some great finds Win. Glad you had a good time and thanks for sharing those cool pics. Are you going to tumble them? I did try tumbling one piece, really didn't like the result. I'm going to try again and see what happens, I've got a piece set aside.
