I found this "splat" of copper at the Pow Wow in Q. I immediately saw "clock" and bought it. Nice price for me, plenty of profit for seller. Everyone wins! The process is melt 1200grams of old copper pennies, pour vigorously onto a stainless steel "table", let cool, pickle, then color with heat. Gotta love the creativity of the men who made the splat. My contribution was drill a hole and add a clock mechanism. Big woop.............

Interesting stuff. Methinks I want a melting furnace for a late Christmas present to myself. I collect about 7 or 8 lbs of silver plated copper braided wire every week at work. The possibilities are endless...

I see you've already got it done, congrats! It looks great. How does it look on the wall?

lee making a foundry is easy peasy japoneasy.
look for foundry supply in your area and the cement is not too expensive. A paint can is the shell. 50Kbtu torch is cheap. propane for heat (may not be hot enough for copper. silica crucibles on ebay for a few bux...... great winter hobby for northerners.
color is not sealed. should I seal it?

Paint, a small brush, and a steady hand? It's always sumthin, ain't it?
My sister got a large (14" at least) hammered copper plate, drilled a hole in it and mounted clock workings. She then glued on some turquoise nuggets and small carved stone animals to mark the hours. Works for me.
(I actually prefer digital clocks - easy to see, and I don't have to tax my brain to figure out the time, lol! But that wouldn't go so good with the copper art.)

stamp and fill with nail polish, then clear coat. Thanks dave!
The thing is I mounted it high enough the minute hand extends above the piece.
I suggested we put it on the wall and then paint the numbers around the piece on the wall.

@shotgunner, that is a pretty splat.
In my experience with heating copper for color, it will not stay that color. Somewhere on this forum, it was mentioned that a product called Everbrite will seal the colors in. I bought it, but haven't tried it yet. Heated copper colors are beautiful.
Maybe you could solder small numbers and/or dots on it so it would work for wife and daughter.

Love the clock! Leave it without numbers and make people think Flame painting has to be sealed to keep the color or it fades as the copper tarnishes. Everbright works - so does Future floor polish.

I don't know if you should seal it! LOL I found that when I flame colored copper it changed a lot when I tried clear lacquer and clear acrylic to coat it,,,that's why I asked! connrock
