They say that “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”, or you might simply call it “stealing,” but I want to give a big THANKS! To don39. On another forum he posted a tutorial on making a 6 prong setting using half-round wire. I imitated/stole his design for my first attempts at “silversmithing.” I hope it's ok to post this link to the other forum: gemstone.smfforfree4.com/index.php/topic,6175.0.html I only melted one of three, so not too bad. They are only a satin 400 grit finish because I don’t know how to polish them. I’ll probably shine them up if I ever learn how. I made these for my wife Anna for St. Valentine’s Day. I hope she likes them. I hope you do too. As always, any & all feedback on how to improve is greatly appreciated. Not a great day for phtography, no sun, but I couldn't wait to share them :>) Front Back Thanks for looking, Rich

Well, I don't know how to post the complete link, so if you click on the above link, then click on Silversmithing/ Metalsmithing for Jewlelery design, the tutorial is pinned.

Hi Rich, It's not stealing if someone put it out as a tutorial ie, if they didn't want you to copy it they shouldn't have made a tutorial. It's ok by me that's why I did it. It beats the knock off mountings and is a good one to learn silversmithing. I like the way you placed the bail crook on the outside instead of bending the horizontal prong wires to cross it. Thanks 39don. I was pleasantly surprised how solid then mounting is, the stone does not move at all.
The reason I didn’t bend them is because I could not figure out how you made the bends in the horizontal prong wires to accommodate the vertical prong/bail wire. I’m sure that it makes it much stronger.
Another idea I saw on a you-tube video by Soham Harrison, is to file a flat where the wires meet (his design is very different) so I will try that next time.
Your design is great and I appreciate you sharing it with me.

I made a few of these last year. I also like a variation on this where wire is bent into U-shape and then the bottom coroners of each U is placed touching the next. Even stronger then this design.

Those are looking good! I really prefer the minimalist look for settings.

SA WEET! She's gonna love those. You're gonna get lots of smooches. You did a real nice job. That's a real good project to get your feet wet. 39don was very generous to post this. I saw the Soham Harrison one, too and thought about doing this. He's my hero. Nice guy, too.

Your design is great and I appreciate you sharing it with me. Rich I made me a stamping die in a piece of 1/2" aluminum flat stock using a small round file to make a groove. I soldered a piece of coat hanger, as close to .064' I could find. to a piece of 1/2" steel flat stock. This coat hanger wire is aligned parallel and centered to the groove. I mark the 1/2 round silver wire's center point and place over the alum plate's groove, flat side up . I align the top plate and hit it with a hammer. When you get some experience at this you can do more than one wire at a time. By the way Rich all you have to do to polish it is to use a 4" od X 1" wide X your shaft size, running at 3450 RPM and red jeweler's rouge. Be careful and don't let it yank it out of your hands. The wheel must be fuzzed up, not tightly sewed together, cut the side stitches if necessary. 39don

Thanks for all the kind words & encouragement. This project wasn't too intimidating for a beginner & I do like the end result.
So 39don, red rouge, that's all? I thought I had to go through a whole progression of grits like in polishing stone. And thanks for explaining your stamping die, I'll need more skills before I attempt that.
Scott, thank you my friend, maybe someday I'll learn how to do that embed thing too.
