Found this chunk o' palm on the RTH Brenda field trip in January. I was so excited about finding the fish fossil there, that I forgot all about the palm. Sorry, pic a little overexposed.
Close up
The bottom edge showing pores
This is probably the best color rendering of it.
The size of a small avocado
This specimen was found within ten feet of Jim's @wampidy truck, where he sat carving on that field trip. For whatever reason, it seems whenever I pull over to hunt rocks, I seem to park right on top of some killa stuff. I've learned to check under everyone's vehicles nowadays...
Edit - forgot to add the slab! This is cut with the grain.
The edge with tell-tale pores
Thanks for looking.

Wow, that is awesome. I remember you hooting about it and showing it off. The others were bent on finding so of that too but I do not think it happened. Jim

Killer palm Jean. Love palm. It is about as cool a fossil as there is. It heat treats well too. That one is over the top. Did you find that close to the coral?

James, the palm chunk was from the RTH field trip to Brenda for jasper. Brenda is just a bit northeast of Quartzsite, the rocks in that area are mostly of volcanic origin, with some other things thrown in for good measure.
The coral was found at Potholes, a claim that my prospecting club has. Finding some cool rocks/fossils made up for the lack of gold there, lol. How lucky was that? Without that, it would have been a disappointing time there.
To get to potholes from San Diego, you go out I-8 east to Yuma, then go north on Hwy 95 like you are going to Quartzsite. Then you take Imperial Dam Road back to the west, and cross over the Colorado River and back into California at Senator Wash Rd.
So, long story short, the coral was found about 67 miles as the crow flies to the south-southwest of where the fossil palm was. We also find coral similar? same? as that closer to home out in Ocotillo Wells. That's only 100 miles driving distance, 72 miles as crow flies from San Diego.

I know you would rather rock hunt. Seems like you have a lot of variety close by. I do 3.5 hours to my closest coral hole from Atlanta. Also my favorite one. I have no volcanoes or basalt or lava. I live in the worn out and exposed granite bowels of the volcanoes. I wish i had the agates created by the lava's. Instead i have to mire lower than whale dung and excrement of the ancient oceans. Are you playing your violin

Thanks for the comment, Mike. While I like my fossils, most are not good for cabs. This one will stay a specimen (collecting dust on the shelf with all the others, lol).
Jim, you could have heard me hooting and hollering over the palm or the fossil fish, they both came from right there. I think some small pieces of palm may have been found by the others, but no chunks.
James, it's about a 5 1/2 hour drive to Quartzsite from here, and Brenda is another hour from there. So still some traveling to do, I wouldn't say it's quite in my backyard. From home, it's a good couple hours to Ocotillo Wells and more fossils and rocks. Gold, a heckuva lot of work for just a few specks, I suppose I would be more excited about prospecting if it was worth my while.
James, there is no crying in rock hounding!

Thanks again, Mike. At my house, "dust" is a noun, not a verb, lol! Hey, maybe I can get a bushy-tailed cat and train it to dust for me.
droseraguy, I had found a couple small thin pieces of the palm last year on the Brenda field trip. Also found one other piece I had forgotten about, I'll have to get a pic of it to add.
Mel, I'd love to take credit for the palm slab, but it is one I picked up already slabbed at the PowWow in Quartzsite last month. When I saw it, I just had to get it! Despite how much rough and slabs I already have, I'm a sucker for buying more, especially when the price is right!

Yowza, sweet find Jean! I thought the slab was from the Brenda find. Are you gonna cut it?

The slab? Or the palm chunk? I'll cab up the slab, but I think the chunk will remain a specimen.

I have some pieces of palm wood from that area too Jean. Wish you would cut that brenda piece so I can see if mine will be any good ;-)

Thanks, Scott. Too bad you couldn't make that field trip, you would have had fun.
Diane, did you find any this year, or are we talking about last year's palm finds?
What? You want me to cut that magnificent (dust collecting) specimen? Actually, I wouldn't have a problem with doing so, but it is a little grainy on the outside, so probably wouldn't amount to much. Let me think about that...

I got a few pieces both times Jean. I could have sworn I showed the ones I got this trip to you when we were out there. Come on, you know you want to cut it.

Yeah, I maybe remember you showing me some. I guess I was still excited about finding the fossil fish, so probably wasn't paying a whole lot of attention, lol. Besides, you'd already found the blue rock before we got to that last location, so wasn't really expecting to find anything else cool, you had used up your allotment of cool finds! So did you find the palm this year at the last place we were at again?
I may just polish the bottom edge where the pores are on the flat lap, and see what it looks like just a little ways in. If nothing else, it'll give it a flat bottom to set on. Yeah, we'll see.
