Was that on fresh steel or the used grit blade? In my tool and die days I had some fights with steel that had absorbed various nasties when trying to braze or weld. Maybe if I decide to build one I should get a blade from the folks who built this...

why not weld diamond segments onto some 1/8" flat stock? Like this but flat/straight and not round:

That's what I had in mind, more or less.

Barranca carries segments and drag saw blades. Price is not cheap.

I just joined the forum to post about the drag saw I built this summer. I used a pumpjack for gear reduction but I'm looking for a newer gear reduction box as the pump jack is pretty worn out. The saw has a 6 foot MK Diamond blade, the 6 foot blade only has 4 feet of diamond segments and I have to say it is not well made. There are segments that are not brazed on straight and segments that are curved, plus the brazing is... sloppy. In all had I known what I was getting I'd have bought the segments and brazed it myself- at least I'd know who to cuss out.
I have a few videos on youtube showing progress and my first cut a week ago. Here are the links:

Nice job on the build.
Looks like the effective stroke is about ten inches and maybe five segments on any given point. That about right?

That's about it, I think I've found the replacement gear reducer and with that in I'll be able to adjust the stroke length say 6" to 18" depending on the size of the rock. I also didn't mention that I have a wide range of speed adjustment from about 20 seconds per stroke (good for starting and checking the cut) to 90 strokes per minute. Right now the whole thing develops too much vibration to run more than the (aprox) 45 strokes per min. in the video. I also have a list of at least ten improvements I'll be making next spring when the weather gets warm enough.
