A buddy and I made a couple trips up to Oglala National Grasslands last summer looking for Fairburn agates. We found some small ones that had some patterning, none that had all the proof of a 100% Fairburn. He found one that we have spent hours looking at, wondering if it might have Fairburn patterning on the inside or not. Well now with the new blade I decided to put all our speculation to rest. Here's the outside, tough to see the small bits of fortification showing: And the cut: So... close but no cigar, not a Fairburn. I think this a pretty Prairie Agate though.

Looks like it was trying real hard to become a Fairburn. Mother nature just didn't give it enough time to grow up.

Actually, that one doesn't look like it was weathered out of its host formation long enough to be a Fairburn. Fairburns are usually pretty smooth on the outside from thousands of years being tumbled by spring thaw tumbling.

I've dragged home many dirty potatoes over the years. Some were winners, while most were losers. Knowing what you have in advance would make it too easy and lessen the absolute joy and excitement of cutting into a winner every once in a while. Enough said ... you need to go dig and haul some more dirty potatoes.

yep, that's what I determined after seeing no Fairburn banding inside it. I thought I might get lucky but no dice.
It's still pretty though.
