Carol says oysters are sold by the dozen here, 98 cents/oyster. That is expensive. They are $3-4 a dozen served on the half shell in oyster bars on the coast here. Families pass their 'claims' down over the years. These families play hard ball if they catch you messin with their claim. A buck a piece would be a deterrent for sure. The $35 bushel is about as cheap a meat as you can get. Apalachicola Bay in the gulf is king of oysters down here. Might be king of the sunsets, looking south, you can see the barrier St George on the horizon. All that water is shallow boat busting oyster reef

jamesp, did you go to Posey's Oyster Bar at St. Marks before they closed it? We went there a few times to eat, listen to good music, and party a couple of times.

Damn, that sunset will knock your socks off!!!!! AWESOME colors... Not my photo Michael. But used to spend 2 months out of the year about 70 miles to the west in Mexico Beach and fish. It looks real nice from 30 miles out in the ocean. The sun setting in the SW sky is wicked, the reflection on the water messes with the sky too.

They get huge. I have seen 25 inches when claws are spread. One crab will fill you up. In October they have no shell, they go up in the spring fed creeks and can be caught. You must be at a knapping session?

I haven't been on for a while, but you are my first catch up on the board James . So I was hoping to see some pics of how your latest haul baked up and what do I see instead?! Ugly, nasty, naked conch by the truckful! Bleh - thanks for the offer, but that is one seafood I can do without! I loved the picture of the sunset tho, and the oyster fishing was cool too. I especially liked your memories of your childhood and the vast array of palatable seafood you indulged in. Thanks for sharing!

Will be posting soon. Glad you enjoyed the ancient history of my younger years. I really got into a lot of trouble back then. The protein from seafood was needed to fuel the monster.

Love the trouble - do tell Certainly forgot more than i remember. I often stayed at my Grandmother's(Mema) at her beach house. She let me run wild. One night we dug a trench between the jetties and the almost high tide mark. The 2 AM beach patrol was driving the narrow spit of sand and our trench stuck him. Then the rising tide swallowed his car before the wrecker had an inkling of a chance to pull him out. We always hated that patrolmen. We timed the tide just right.
