My son worked hard this year in school and as a reward I am taking him on a 3-day trip to find Blue Forest pet wood this weekend.
He has a bunch of small pieces but he really wants a trophy.
I bought a 4 foot flexible drill bit to use as a probe, we are both aware that we need to dig and that there is nothing on the surface to indicate what is below the surface, but any first - hand experience or advice is unashamedly solicited.
Of course the standard trip report chock - full of misadventures will be coming.
Thanks all

take plenty of water and lip balm. The wind can be a bear out there. I would like to join you if I could, but work is starting to back up, urgggghhh!
Oh yeah, there are a couple good youtube videos on digging blue forest. (also some yokel stuff)

No real guidance except-you should pick me up on the way there. That area is on my list for this summer, just have to see if we can pull it off. Happy hunting.

John, one more thing. There are a TON of oil field roads out there and it is super easy to get lost. At least for me. I found it helpful to have a Google Map picture loaded on my iPad, but even then it is crazy. I don't have any hotspot GPS coordinates or else I would share. Just look for holes, there are a lot. Good luck.

Thanks all, yeah Mark we are well acquainted with the desert/oil fiend road phenomenon and I rely on my phone with cached image tiles to keep me from getting lost. You can see the oil activity on Google maps' satellite view.
Fontenelle reservoir is right there so we will probably camp and fish there.
We will only be there a couple days and it is our first time at that location so we are keeping our expectations low.
Leaving in the morning and my boy is pretty excited.
