I was planning a week in Klamath Falls for vacation with my wife, so I spent a little time on line researching the area for rock hunting opportunities. I got lucky with an old news article about a local who'd found a fossil fish, and where it was found. Nothing else rock-wise popped up in my search that looked worth pursuing, but I rarely get to go fossil hunting, so that was okay. As soon as we had some down time from vacationy stuff, I headed out. I didn't bring the camera, so I have no location shots, but I'm happy to share more information about it with any interested members. The day went very well, between two different locations about a mile from each other. I kept finding stuff I wasn't even looking for. Bonus rocks! Pics: Pay special attention to the dangler on the toothy anglerfish. I'm guessing that's pretty rare. Those are some fugly fish!

That dangler is a great find. You can go through google/yahoo images and try to locate similar. bet you won't find many. I would say that is a spectacular find and the fossil folks would like to see that one. anthropologists paleontologists etc Deep water fossils seems unique. It is a good resource having the internet images to ID things.

I did a Yahoo search and saw only one fossil, and it looks fake.

I did a Google search, and found a similar article about a local finding a fossil fish, and it's obviously genuine. Here is the article on the local: www.heraldandnews.com/members/news/frontpage/article_8a26f346-aa14-11e1-ba13-001a4bcf887a.htmlI remember a slightly different article, and it seems to me the fish head was clearly visible, and there was only one photo, but who knows...my memory ain't what it used to be. Main thing is, it gave me the impetus to hunt and a starting point to do it. I ended up in an area about a half mile from the stated location, further north, and then another mile north (roughly) for the second location. I'm happy to share them. There are other references to Klamath Falls fossil fish locations, such as this one: www.oregongeology.org/sub/milo/ohmi-klamath.htm About halfway down the list, look for "Unclassified District Klamath County Fossil Localities". Unfortunately, none of what I found supports my theory that I found an anglerfish, as the other fossil fish reported to be found in the area appear to be freshwater fish. Dang it. Guess I should have done my research before spouting off.

still your research does not mean that is NOT what the fossil is... do we know for sure some fresh water fish didn't have angling appendages at some point as well? would be great if you could get an ID on it... keep us posted.

Very cool finds indeed!!! I happened to be in a very high end fossil and rock shop in the West Edmonton mall today, and by high end I mean super high prices. He did have some stunning material in the store though. Anyway I came across this fossil and thought it was an angler fish from what you had posted. So I asked him if I could take a picture of his angler fish and after I did he informed me that it was some type of lizard. So you may want to research lizards, sorry I did not get more info or rather remember the name. I don't know the price he was asking but it would have been over a thousand for sure. It was about a 10 by 12 piece, the pen was in front of it so don't use that to judge the size. All in all a very cool fossil and store, not on my budget though, I would say around 5X the cost of items I have seen else ware. Hope the photo works.

When I first saw your post, I thought that the "lure part" of the fish looked strange, like another overlaid fossil or other intrusion. It isn't of the same color, sharpness, depth, etc. Still you have a great fossil!!! A real top shelf piece. Would be neat to identify the species, which shouldn't be too hard if you take it to a university nearby.
I just got back from the pay fossil digs in the Green Lake formation where they also have fantastic fossils and it is easy to catch the bug with fossils this nice, huh?

Tom: Pretty cool fossil. I can see why it'd be pricey. Love that curving tail. Panamark: Fossils are what got me started rockhounding. I grew up in the Cincinnati area scouring the creeks for trilobites and horn coral. It's like finding buried treasure.

After googling fossil lizards just about all have legs or at least flippers. My image does not show legs, now maybe they are buried in the rock matrix? I doubt it. Yet I have no reason at all to dought the store owner whom I believe to be very knowledgable. Now I am confused, but then I always am:)

Well that is what I am thinking is the dangler, the triangle arrow head shaped thing attached to the string that connects to what I thought was the nose/mouth of the lizard/fish:). Woder if u are getting the entire picture, do you see an entire pen standing in a pen holder?

yeah, that is the head skeleton you are seeing. It is just that the neck being bent at a strange angle makes it look odd.

This is without a sdingle doubt a lizard The Chinese send a lot of Keichosaurus which is what yours probably is. Not the finest specimen as only one leg is visible, and not color enhanced like most Chinese Keichosaurus are. A cursory google search seems to indicate Keichosaurus is an aquatic lizard. Here is a super nice one.
