Hello community - The HP ( short for The Hillbilly Philosopher ) here. Nice to meet'cha.
About me - Central NC, a year away from 40, married 21 years, 3 sons ( 19, 14, 9 ) .
Work with rock and soil all day - been in the construction industry for 17 of the last 21 years .
Recently started taking classes in Human Resources to get a degree - taking a full load on top of life at home and work. ( I am a glutton for punishment obviously )
Hobbies - hunting, fishing, camping, homebrewing beer, small woodworking, small mechanical for fun, playing with my dog ( Pepper lab x German Short hair ).
Recently gave into a long time temptation and got into rock tumbling after a trip to a tourist gem mine place in western NC.
Have 3 harbor Freight double drum units, and envision a bigger tumbling system I want to build. ( BTW if anyone is good with google sketch-up or whatever it is called, I am not and could use some help...) . Also have an unhealthy want to a cab machine after learning a little more ...
Been creeping the board here for about a month just soaking up info, decided to go ahead and sign up and join the fun.

welcome to the madness. If your looking to build your tumbler frame out of wood I can guide you a bit. I have an excel formula sheet to figure out the pulleys and speeds too. If you are building out of welded metal there are others that can help with that. Here's a recent post I made regarding tumbling getting out of control and includes a photo of my home built rig too. forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/66105/tumbler-addict-pictures-warning-newbiesChuck

Welcome to the forum. "HP" means something different to most of us.

Thanks for the warm welcome so far guys.
Rockisland I looked at your provided link - and that is close to what i am interested in, not quite "it" but close. I may want to pick your brain a little. Quick sketch idea is a "stacked' unit like that, with motor running the third or center level, and then relayed pulley going up or down respectively to shelves 1 , 2, 4 and 5. I like the PVC drum builds I have seen, and have access to pipe and fittings up to 12 inches I can play with ..
Thinking shelves 1 and 2 for stage 1, 3 for stage 3, 4 for stage 3 and 5 for polish.
I am not sold on wood - in my minds wyw i am thinking a structure built out of 1' square tubing. Build it all and then have it powdercoated before mounting pillar blocks and roller hardware. I *think* a 1/2 horse will power it all - still trying to figure rolling resistance of all 5 shelves, etc etc. Now obviously that will take a LOT of rocks to feed.....

roundrock - as you see from my comment above i love to overbuild things. For my homebrewing ( if that is one of the shared hobbies you spoke of ) i built a HERMS system that is insanely overbuilt - but man it is fun to brew on ... I'll see if I can drag up some pictures to a host site and post it up .

Another welcome from Michigan. You'll probably want to dedicate more shelves to stage one because it takes up most of your tumbling time. Have you considered the noise produced by PVC barrels vs. rubber barrels? I've never used PVC, but I think it's loud. If you're tumbling in your house, that could be an issue.

Noise is of no concern - the tumblers are located in my shop, on the back side of the property. With the various other things that go om out there, along with Pepper barking and roosters crowing, what a little more background noise, lol...
