Sorry kap, I missed the Hogg part and was on the "On our way back home we stopped by Hiddenite, NC to the Hiddenite mine and after a day there we realized the whole place was "salted"." part. Somewhat pissed about my experience there.
And you are right. I went to one of Rodney's digs at Hogg. No way you can salt tourmaline in a quartz boulder.

They have rocks there that are not native to the mine. A lot of sluice mines bring in rocks from all over and put in the dirt so every one finds something. Sometimes you can find some nice pieces. But it is not native for the location.

Just curious as I never went to a mine. What is meant by the term "Salted"? That's a term for when an owner of a non-producing mine sprinkles around some material bought elsewhere to make it look like a nice deposit. Scam artists used to salt worthless exhausted gold mines and sell 'em to city slickers, who thought they were getting a bargain after seeing flecks of gold in the dirt or on the walls of a for-sale claim. The word now is also used for pay-to-dig sites where they have more weekend diggers than material. Gotta remember that those places are charging more than they paid to import the material.

I am 64 years old now and I was 10 years old the first time I went to the Hogg Mine. I sure wish I knew then what I ka know now. I still have rose quartz pieces, mica books, tourmaline, feldspar(moonstone) and beryl. The caretaker back then, told me and brother we could hunt in the glory hole. It was supose to have aquamarine in it. At the time I did not know what I was lookinig for. I remember the old well house having beautiful beryl, rose quartz specimens in the wall. The first time back in the mine after 45 years things sure had changed. I remember the rose quartz pit. Back in the day there was several high walls. The Georgia highway department mined rock and crushed it to put as a base on Interstate 85 between LaGrange and West Point. Always have good memories of the Hogg mine. Old and new ! And Yes I wish too there would be another half price dig ! ! 1
