December 12 Update to second surgery
------------------------------------
Doc went in and the metal end of the ACL had ground up a bunch of bone and left scar tissue in the knee. He removed the ACL that he put in in September, cleaned out all the bone fragments and scar tissue, and put in bone grafts to get the bone back to usable condition.
I was in surgery 2 and a half hours and have been sore all week and struggling with staying awake and getting around. I CAN walk which is great, but I will be in a straight leg brace for 6 weeks 24x7. The other good news is that the cartilage healed up really well so as long as I don't damage that again I can look forward to one more surgery (third time's a charm?) to put the second ACL into the new bone that will hopefully be healed by then.
It's been a rough week. I'm tired and disappointed.
On the up side I got a consolation gift for myself in the mail; spessartite garnet and smoky quartz specimen!
------------------------------------
Well, I had knee surgery in September. They did a big repair on the mangled cartilage, and gave me a new ACL.
6 weeks on crutches and an annoying brace and I started the long road to recovery. A few weeks later the Dr had me in and xray-d the knee.
"Huh, never seen that before" says the surgeon.
The ACL is grafted in and held in place on one end with screws into the bone. The upper side is held taut by a metal button that rests against the bone and the new ACL is attached to this pin/button thing.
The xray showed the pin had pulled into the bone, almost into the joint. This leaves the ACL slack and the pin could slip the rest of the way into the joint.
Well the Dr said if it wasn't stable I'd need to have the ACL re-redone. It's been a few weeks and it seems to be having problems...
I'm meeting with the Dr tomorrow to see if I can get one of his 2 remaining slots this year so I can get the ACL done under the same deductible.
That's the deal. I've been unable to move stuff around, navigate stairs well, step over and around stuff in the garage. I can't hike or carry rocks so my rocking has been near zero. I'd hoped to begin getting back to things about now but that clock is about to be reset.
I'd hoped to come back to the boards with good news but there isn't much. The only ray of light is that as long as there isn't any more cartilage damage (not expected) I won't have to do the crutches and brace this time.
The counter resets on my recovery though, but hopefully I can still be out and about some next summer and more into the fall.
That's it. Sorry I've been quiet. Wish I had good, fun things to report but I don't - yet...
