2018/March/15 - EDIT: This thread is the most important I have ever done.
I am now including a "transporter" (under construction)for access to the most important parts.

Understanding Ourselves
What is Hypnosis?
James Braid:
Milton Erickson:
There are two kinds of people:
Those that go around saying “there are two kinds of people,” and those that don’t!
Seriously, wouldn’t it be nice to quickly zero in on people as they enter your space and know what to expect and how to handle them?
Here is a collection of Paradigms you may wish to research that have been proposed down the centuries for just that purpose, along with a few starting book sources:
Two Types of People ... intermixed!: Yin/Yang [possibly the most widely accepted] Yin is identified with the Moon, female, darkness, and rest. Yang is identified with the Sun, male, light, and motion. [Many sources; one being; Harmonizing Yin and Yang -Eva Wong (editor)]
Three Body Types: 1. Pyknic (stocky) - cyclothymic (Inclination to manic depressive illness)
2. Leptosomatic (thin) - schizothymic (inclination to schizophrenia)
3. Athletic - viscous (inclination to epilepsy). [Physique and Character -Ernst Kretschmer (1888-1964)]
- Talk about your LOSE-LOSE!
Four Temperaments (body fluids): Sanguinary (blood), Melancholic (black bile), Choleric (bile), Phlegmatic (mucus) [formulated by Greek physician Hippocrates (d. 377 B.C.); Personality Plus -Florence Littauer]
Four Types of Suggestibility: Physical, Emotional, Somnambul, & Intellectual. [Professional Hypnotism Manual -John Kappas (Husband to Florence Henderson)]
-I prefer the word “Analytical” to Intellectual.
Five Communication Styles: Placator, Blamer, Computer, Distractor, Leveler. [Peoplemaking -Virginia Satir.]
- Virginia taught that in communicating people tend to get through life by being a door mat, blaming others, distracting people, staying in their heads, OR leveling - acting in the now. "You are telling me your life is a mess, yet you are smiling as if everything is OK. Which of those messages do you really mean?
Eight Personality Types: The combinations derived from the Three functions (Extroversion-Introversion, Perception-Intuition, Thinking-Feeling) 1. The extrovert/perceptive/thinker, 2. The extrovert/perceptive/feeler, 3. etc. [Derived by Carl Gustov Jung (1875-1961)]
Sixteen Personality Types: The combinations derived from the Four functions (Extroverted-Introverted, Sensing-Intuitive, Thinking-Feeling, Judging-Perceiving), [An extension of Jung's work by Isabel Briggs Myers; Type Talk -Kroeger & Thuesen]
Archetypes: Many and varied symbols from the subconscious mind such as the Rebel, the Judge, the Conquering Hero, the Outlaw, the Great Mother, the Child, etc. [many sources including Plato; Awakening the Heroes Within -Carol S. Pearson; The Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious -C.G. Jung
- (good luck if you chose this book!)] - Tough Reading!
Astrology: Assigns humanity into 12 types, dependant upon the 12 zodiac signs. [many variations: Fatalistic (you can’t do anything about it); or Influences (you can). Some versions trace back to Chaldea and Old Testament patriarch Abraham (b. 1996 B.C.). Eastern; American; Oriental; Indian; Egyptian; A Short History of Astrology -Christopher McIntosh]
Behavioral Styles: Consist of interactions of four main types: Supporting - Controlling, Direct - Indirect, and four subtypes: relater, socializer, thinker, director. [Communicating at Work -Tony Alessandra]
Color Functional Types: The way people react to Four Basic Colors: 1. Dark-blue "Depth of Feeling" 2. Blue-green "Elasticity of will" 3. Orange-red "Force of will" 4. Bright yellow "spontaneity." There are Four Auxiliary Colors: 5. Violet "identification" 6. Brown "belonging, the senses" 7. Black "no, the end" 8. Neutral grey "border, or wall" [The Luscher Color Test -Max Luscher (b. 1923)]
Facial Features: the observation of shapes, patterns, or forms that have been repeatedly observed to correspond to specific character types. [began with Mesmer and Phrenology. Characterology -Carl E. Wagner, Jr]
Rayid Personality types: Based on the Four Basic Iris Structures 1. Jewels (mental) dot like pigments scattered in the iris. 2. Flowers (emotional) Distinctly curved or rounded openings in the fibers. 3. Shakers (Physical) Dot like pigments and rounded openings in the fibers. 4. Streams (kinesthetic) uniform fiber structure radiating out from the pupil. You may wish to compare this with Iridology. [What the Eye Reveals -Denny Johnson]
Enneagram Types (my personal favorite!)
Connecting points and “wings” make this a very complex subject. [Many. I recommend Thomas Condon’s “The Enneagram Movie & Video Guide” published by The Changeworks for a fun study.
- Example: check out (or buy) the video The Scarlet and the Black staring Gregory Peck (a ONE) and Christopher Plummer (an EIGHT) and watch the interplay between these two types in a true story of the Second World War!]
Group I. [Types 2,3,4] the Image (Hurt) Center. "Will you like me?"
“Twos, Threes and Fours are confused about IDENTITY. Deeply involved in IMAGE, they tend to confuse who they are and how they feel with the roles they have been playing, or with the images of who they seem to be. This group has the greatest tendency to lose track of how they feel, because of the way they imagine they should feel, and therefore, they have more conflicts with relationships and matters of the heart than the other groups.”
Type 2 the Helper: Tries to be Needed.
Type 3 the Achiever Tries to Succeed.
Type 4 the Romantic Tries to be Special.
Group II. The Head-thinking (Fear) Center. "How does this all fit together?"
“Fives, Sixes and Sevens are not confused about who they are or how they feel. Their focus is on the dangers of life. They react fearfully because they live more in their heads than their bodies, and aren't sure what is going on around them. They are confused about how to take action and assert their will in the world.”
Type 5. the Analytical: Tries to Understand.
Type 6. The Follower: Searches for the perfect Leader.
Type 7. the Adventurer: Tries to avoid Pain by pursuing pleasure and excitement.
Group III. The Gut, or Instinctive (Anger) Center.
Eights, Nines and Ones react from Anger. Emotions distort thought, and the angrier they get, the less clearly they are able to think, so they seem to be physically awake, but mentally asleep.
Type 8. The Leader Tries to Prevail over all opposition.
Type 9. The Peacemaker: Tries to Avoid conflict.
Type 1. The Perfectionist: Tries to Force Reality to conform to an arbitrary set of standards.
By studying ANY of these ideas you will gain great insight into yourself and those around you.
When all is said and done, remember that they are all just paradigms [simplified maps or models] of the vast complexities that lie in each of us.
As they say in NLP, “Don’t mistake the map for the territory.”
