Hi y'all, we have a place close by our house where you can find petrified cactus ...and snail fossils and arrow heads. Betty's cousin told us of a spot not 20 minutes from our house where they have dug up petrified cactus plants..approximately 3 1/2" in diamtere. We saw the pieces..they are huge. there is also a creek close by that they find fossilized snails. We found pet wood in the creek by our house last saturday evening when I was fishing for flat head cat fish. there are also reports of an old indian camp area that you can find arrow heads and pottery shards. Seems like we are always finding cool stuff around here in Oklahoma. Thanks Steve

THat sounds really cool Steve. I didnt even know catcus could be petrified. Guess I never thought about it before.
It's nice for you to have such a diversity of treasures near your home.
How about some pics of that cactus?

Steve, I'd like to see a pic of a petrifed cactus too. That would be really neat. You'd think that Daniels book would have some samples of it...but none. Arrowheadas are really cool too. Steve

If you find some arrowheads you really need to write down when and where you found them. People can fake or should I say people have gotten so good at Knapping that it is very difficult to tell the difference between a modern point and old ones. Did you find any complete ones that were not broken ?? Pics would be great

Have you cut the cactus? Or any broken pieces to see the inside? I could see a cast but mineral replacement seems unlikely. Does it look like any type of modern cactus?

I think it's unlikely cactus would ever petrify also. It seems to be too soft and fleshy and would probably rot away.

Nah, I'm sure fossilman will know the exact species but that E-Bay fossil looks to me to be a Lycopod stem section. I think those were treelike club mosses that grew to very large sizes. I'd not expect a cactus to look like that....Mel

I don't see why cactus would not petrify. I have a stone that is full of (can not remember name) maybe gastropods Jean knows because she told me the name back somewhere on here. Anyway they are soft critters and rare because of it but they are out there. I would guess that they had to be buried quickly under perfect circumstances. Jim
