So you just set the egg in the 'saddle' where it rests in a stable position and send the blade toward the rock ? Basically 3 points of contact, the base wood and the two vertical walls ? Do you set the rock in with a flat spot facing down ? And the down force of the blade plants the rock on the wood base ? I suppose you have to stop the blade after the rock is cut to avoid blade hitting the wood... I suppose you could make a horseshoe bracket behind the jig to allow the blade to proceed deeper past the rock and depend on the auto-cutoff. or do you just set the auto-cut off when the bade is close to the wood back wall ? Too many questions. You have a tub full of proof that it works. ah, you just posted the sphere in the saddle. So friction of saddle is greater than down force of blade even for a smooth sphere, hmmm. tub full of proof: P.S. Not arguing, just asking questions Dave. LOL! If it didn't work my normal placid demeanor would have destroyed it. Yep, If it worked for the Kid, I thought it would work for me. Cutting, polishing, and selling eggs was his livelihood. He didn't have time for messing around adjusting clamps. Three points of contact + the down force of the blade acts as a locking continually tightening point. I even cut one only 1/2" in diameter! Three points held it! Rattle each egg a tad to make sure it is setting secure and you are good to go. On the trim saw the jig is back-stopped by the end of the table. On the slab saw the auto-cutoff has to be set to stop at the end of the cut in the jig or you will have to build a new jig for each cut. Once set, just toss in egg after egg. It gives amazing control. I can rotate most eggs any way I want and turn on the saw. Even odd shapes can be turned to a position where they set secure, but perhaps not to the cut you desire. I hope you make one and give it a bit of a go.

Pics please Mr. Fossilman??? Sorry, haven't been on here much! Brother and his wife came out for a visit (from Montana),so we took them sight seeing and coastline whale watching-Now it's time to get back into the groove.. Will get some photos,it's a crude set up,pretty easy and works like a charm.......(Of my 1x4 clamping's ...) Finally did some cutting today, temps dropped down to the low 70's... Here is my jig for cutting thundereggs-they are plentyful(because of my woodworking).. Sometimes I need three pieces of wood, sometimes, just two....Works great! Have cut 100's of eggs this way, never once has one slipped off!!

Yes thats where I lose it. What's the difference between just the vise and using this boards?

Yes thats where I lose it. What's the difference between just the vise and using this boards? I believe I can answer that. The metal vise has no give. The rock chips and pops out. The wood gives and conforms to the rock and gets better purchase.

Love those doubles! Two points-the back wood is putting pressure on the two sides pieces to apply more pressure towards the front... If the rock was to spill out,it does it during the clamping process-it shoots out pretty fast too!!

This system never ever fails me...

Ok finally I get it the two side poeces are squezing the front and back and also forcing the back board out into the egg too!!! Ahh maybe I try this!

jamesp wondered if this would work with slabs. I tried them three at a time. A 1/2 day rock trip in Utah ? Unthinkable. We already have more rocks than we will ever do anything with. Getting out is the BIG DEAL! We went to "Gee" will post in Trips when I get back from town. I grabbed three slabs so it had to hold all of them secure and tossed them in my jig just for you. I forgot it couldn't cut beyond 3 1/4" and when it hit the end of the table, had to stop and take it out. I put the top slab back in first, then finished cutting. It broke on a fracture, but the cut continued as if it hadn't happened. The jig is a winner with slabs.

Looks like they could have been stacked 2 inches deep. Great carpentry, not so great a painter. I see you guys using our southern pine. Don't you have your own fir trees ? Perhaps a tariff needs to be put in place. Those trees grow on Confederate soil.

Perhaps a tariff needs to be put in place. Those trees grow on Confederate soil. I used an old can of spray paint for metal appliances - stoves, fridges - should have left it alone, but I thought it would keep the moisture out and prevent swelling. Turns out not to be a problem - yet. The wood is from some old crates (about 10) I pulled apart to build numerous projects including shelves to hold all the meds I'm supposed to take daily - something I vowed to never do. Best laid plans. The flag is just another Progressive attempt to tear this nation apart. Divide and Conquer.

Dave that's a fantastic idea, what a way to cut a rock in half, quite brilliant really. I shall be making one of these!
