Bought myself a near new 20' shipping container to use as secure lock up for rocks & spare equipment. Plans are to have a concrete slab poured in late spring for it to sit on. Shelves will be built across the end & about 3' down each side. A small work bench will also be added. I plan to build in a 30 amp RV type electrical system with a water tight electrical connection on the outside of the container. For now, I can haul many boxes of rocks out of our living room which will make my wife happy. She'll be able to set up a Christmas tree for the first time in 3 years. Most important is that I have a water tight, (double seals on the doors), bug & mouse proof place to store me precious rocks & project machines in various stages of restoring. And I won't have to worry about our wild field cats getting in to have their babies & infest the place with fleas. I'll add pics as work progresses.

Hey Ed, this one's not reconditioned. It was a one trip container sent from the west coast to South Dakota. Except for a couple of very small dents in the back wall, and fork lift tire marks on the floor, It's brand new. I was lucky to find a one tripper locally.

Will you leave room for a little cot for visiting rockhounds? Cot ? Heck, I could probably fit a queen size bed in there with no problem. Hmmm, may not be a bad idea. Never know when I'll find myself in the doghouse.

For a while, I was living on a lot where they were making shipping container tiny houses. Rent was not that crazy, though amenities were scarce. Kinda miss the outdoor shower, kinda don't...

Rained off & on all day. No boxes moved. No shelves built. But I'm drawing up plans for a screened entry which I want to set just inside the metal doors.

I'll look into those Ed. But for an 8' X 8' opening, they may not make them.

I bought a 40' container when we first moved here. Mine was a many trip unit but very weather tight. Biggest problem here is summertime heat. You can't pick up anything metal inside without gloves. I thought about adding vents at bottom and turbine vents but then I would not be weather tight and have dust issue. I use it as my business warehouse. Guess why I no longer sell adhesives. The county isn't crazy about them as there is no permit required. Mine sits on the sand but rust is not much of an issue.

johnjsgems, this might be a silly suggestion but have you thought about putting a tent (or multiple tents) up around it during the summer? Last year I briefly lived in an outdoors 10'x10' metal box (decommissioned Faraday cage), and it was a lot more bearable after we put up a carport cover over it. Still very hot, but not blisteringly so.

LOL. John, the guy I got my 20' from also had a one trip 40' container, but I don't need anything that big.
For the heat problem I have one of those big box fans I'll put inside to blow hot air out when I'm working in there.
I want to set mine on a concrete slab for 2 reasons. #1, it won't sink into our clay mud during spring thaw, & #2, Field mice won't be able to burrow under it to build nests.

I don't have to worry about mice under mine. I've seen snakes going underneath.
