Those dark reddish ones....big garnets??? Can I have some? <grin> Be careful jamesp will be on your doorstep this afternoon...I think he tells a story of some big garnets coming out from up that way years ago by some friends and that he hasn't been able to locate the source. Of course, those might not be garnets at all... ? I'm a newbie, too. (Wouldn't mind having some of those, though!!!!) Btw, welcome to the forum!!!! Be careful, you'll have rocks in your head before....it's highly addictive!!!!!!!!! Merry Christmas!!!!

Also does anyone know a way to keep the shape of the garnet but give it the "wet look". All of the ones I have look much better when wet. This one was the first one I found. But it looks much better wet than dry, but I want to keep the shape.

Hey, you need my address? I'd love to have some of these to use as filler in my tumbles!!! As a newbie my guess to keep their shape and make them shine would be a faceting machine. Maybe with care a flat lap could be used. Basically grind and polish each surface... ?

Very nice garnets ! A few years back there was a location for nice garnets in Villa Rica GA. It is now covered up with housing. My garnets look similar to yours. Have found some garnets south of Villa Rica that had no weight to them what-so-ever, dark grey in color with rough shape like yours.

Just need some basic lapidary machines I figured to keep the crystal structure you would need something to polish each face....what type of basic machines would retain the garnets' crystal shape? Tumbling rounds them off from what I've seen. Now I'm confused...but you know it doesn't take much to confuse me.

According to this thread tumbling that type of garnet doesn't really work too well.

This is a batch I tumbled but it was my first and only attempt. I don't think I did it right.
