While finishing the 1st Batch, I had some obsidian I had accumulated, running in the 2nd vibe. I had some silver sheen from paulshiroma, some mahogany from Fossilman, and some rainbow from an estate sale. After reading most of jamesp 'S dissertation on polishing obsidian, I was brave enough to give it a shot! I used some micro-alumina from johnjsgems, that worked great! I still had some rookie moves, like flats not polishing as well as rounded areas. I was limited to less than 48 of polishing, due to leaving town. Also, lots of finger prints..... Well, I have all the parts, the lumber painted and cut to make my forever tumbler. I think after your first two batches, I'll just burn it all in my jamesp firepit and then give away all my rocks. After the perfection you are producing, I might best quit now, before I embarrass myself. Omg!! Wow! |

When my tumbler starts rolling, i will do my second batch. First batch was garden stones 5 years ago, before my BS tumbler broke. Now, Im on the path with a firever tumbler. But even if I nail it on my second batch, your first batch is better, for simply being your first!   Please keep after it. This is a fun summer on this website. |

I forgot to mention one of my bigger rookie moves! Not knowing there is a difference in ceramics. I had run my pre-polish for 3 days and was expecting to see some shine. There was very little difference from the first day! After a little research, I figured out the I had purchased AO ceramics, typically used for tumbling metal. Basically ceramics with grit! If you are looking for ceramics to run through polish, make sure you buy the "non-abrasive" kind!

Without your personal battle with obsidian, I would have been lost! A non scientific count gave me approx. 11 rotations in 10 seconds, so about 66 rpm's. I ran the obsidian in there for about 3-4 days, with regular rocks. That got most of them through rough grind and ready for the Vibe. I did have my first lid blow-out, as the obsidian can make a batch really gassey! Luckily, I have the tumblers set up with lids facing each other and that kept the lid on with just some minor spillage. I am going to add Castors to the tumbler so it can slide under the workbench and be pulled out for easier access. Jeremy |

They start to bulge outward when gas starts. I have double clamped them. Have had them shoot a long way upon loosening the band clamps. Running cap to cap a great idea. |

Yes, i'm running the rubber caps. I started the double straps after that blowout happened. The cap to cap thing was a total accident, but it kept the cap on just enough to stop major problems. I installed 1" pipe clamps to keep the barrels from creeping. That kept the other barrel in place as the lid was popping off.  |

Those are crazy cool Dude!! I have tumbled Obsidian,but get skunked on the polish part-so all are in a tub in the corner of the bench-LOL..
