Sold to the fat man with a bald head and a camo hat! Bovine it is!! Lol Buffalo burgers anyone?? You just described me! My camo hat isn't a ball cap, more like Carl Spackler from Caddyshack.

WHAT HAPPENED TO MY THREAD?!?! This started out as a legitimate inquiry as to the source of a rare fossil from my homeland, and turned into a horrific display including monkeys riding dogs!!!
THAT IS SO AWESOME!!! I love the internet!!! Thanks for all of the info on it being a Bison tooth as well. That makes is 14% cooler than a horse tooth. =)

Oh, he already had his answer. Wasn't anything else to say about that tooth. You can always count on a monkey to liven things up though.

Nice find, John! Thunder69 You found that in a creek bed in LA? I think I'll have to go with horse on that one. Horse teeth have a higher ratio of length to width, especially noticeable in the first pic. Jean

Pretty sure it is a horse, can't say whether it is truly fossilized or not.
Nebraska was a veritable smorgasbord of mammals back in the Clarendonian Land Mammal Age link, late Cretaceous through the present. I think they just used to call it the Cenozoic. Now it has a new name, and then that is divided up into a bunch of ages. Throw this all out the window for anywhere other than North America, different continents use different time lines. Confused?
Ashfall Fossil Beds in Northeastern Nebraska. Horses, dogs, deer, camels, even one species of rhino.

You could probably take it to a nearby museum or university for (an educated) identification. Probably not something rare, but if it were, you'd want to hold onto it closely. mrrockpicker almost lost a nice Bison occidentalis tooth to a museum that way! Yeah, still have it. The museum said it was better than the specimen they had! Jean, I have always had a lot of respect for you, but it just went up several thousand percent!

Thunder69, those are some cool finds! They are much more complete than what my son found, they are nicely preserved. That one that's about 4.5" long is pretty damn scary looking. I know those are the roots, but GEEZ!!! It's no wonder that they last longer than the skull they are attached to. Thanks for sharing pics!
