captbob, am packaging LFRB and assessing finds. Gotta stay longer, this stuff is just too damn nice to not stay longer. Can't leave. Probably should not tease you like that but next trip out you may want to plan longer stay as if you do not already know that. Years ago I packed rocks in big boxes and sent them home by Greyhound so I could keep hunting. I don't even know if they are still in business. Yes, they are.

After watching the scissor's tail I rate them as a top of the list too richardh. Up on a long thin ridge and lake 70-80 feet down below vertical bluffs with a strong cross wind. Phone line must be 120 feet above water line. They were flat showing out. There is a long fly that attaches himself to the shrubs on windward in groves. They would light and the ST's were chowing down. Though there was 1000 times too many to eat they still had to fight over them. Two buzzards sitting atop power pole watching them as if idiots.

< wondering why my phone isn't ringing yet > 8 LFRB arrived waiting for wife to bring them down driveway. Heifer raising cain after bringing them down. Told her I can't come home now, Colonial Pipe line ruptured again. Expecting gas shortage again. Still working the same area to the right of your point. Lots of territory. All thats left is the 'U' shaped shore at the point. Would not touch Mexico without full legal passage and safety advise. Preferably a well fenced large ranch for destination. Bet it's doable. Every time I start boxing this stuff up I extend my stay...pretty stuff.

A few of todays finds organized Twin 300 HP DEA boat I hijacked for the day. Young tortoise that aimed piss on me. Jasper Woods(they are tricky as they do not window, wait till sawn) Mosses/plumes/freaks 3 turtle back scrapers found here and there Miles of 1 inch tumble gravel bars. Miles and miles and miles. And more miles. www.flickr.com/photos/67205364@N06/sets/72157674598292831Found a monster ghostly jasper about the size of a baby's head. Most jaspers small here. Gotta have x-ray vision. The jaspers are often at the oyster level, probably local to Texas. The big 12 pound freak. any guesses ? These should be a colorful wood. High grade wood hard to find. Hard to read. Would post more wood but no one would believe it. The patina shows perfect wood patterns, not necessarily the inside. Need to go about 100 miles north to get the real wild Texas wood. Probably some of the coolest stone on the planet.

Find your wallet today? ETA: didn't your wife drive a vehicle down the driveway to pick up the boxes? She fusses cause they are so heavy. Ave 42 pounds/box. By the way the rancher that showed me his place lives next town 13 miles upstream, San Ignacio. The Zapata county line is not much further north. He said the county line is where the shoals are. If they are gravel shoals and not that clay pack crap that would be a must do. Actual in river gravel. He told me where the closest boat ramp is but I done forgot. Alkaline wind blown dust is drying skin like no tomorrow. Need to get back to my acids.

Make sure you get home in time to vote.
River banks don't look so good up around San Ygnacio. Fair sized gravel operation to the north side of Hyw 83 about a half mile before that town. Looks active from the sat. pics.
Stay there long enough and I'll be back before you leave!

I might try to access Rio shoals tomorrow. Got to study google earth. The DEA is all over the access points.

If the shoal areas have cobbles it should be prime collecting. They may only be bedrock, don't know. So much of the Rio is silt. First shoals upstream from lake is the Zapata County line. Laredo has a lot of what looks like public access. May be a better spot. I know people collect at Laredo.

Looking at the sat. images, you are back to rather narrow river up there. No longer protected by the wide lake. Be careful if you head up river.
Last night I was looking over areas a bit further south of where we were. Seem to be some accessible spots just to the south east. That southernmost shore of the lake where the dam is looks interesting too. Looks to be entirely cobble on the US side of the dam.

Man, when you guys start sawing Rios and see how hard they are and how much time it takes slabbing a big'un, you are gonna realize you need to start taking life extension pills. Y'all are finding enough beauties to keep you sawing about a hundred years *L*. I saw a lot and have never come close to getting through the little pile I have for myself. That reminds me, I have to contact ole John for a new blade, The Rios has about worn mine down to a nubbin. Bob, where are your dang rock pics? ??. You got to get yore priorities straight man. First thing on your list should be a pile of pics for us to drool over *L*..Mel

Was supposed to be cooler, not. Been hunting hot south facing slopes for light till dark. Needed the rest. The south bank you mention needs to be surveyed. You are very correct. Think I will head there and survey since I slept so late. Gotta do another 8 to 10 boxes. About ready to go home. Sabre52, I will be tumbling a lot of these biscuits whole. Will remove the patina and divots with a big grinder and then tumble the whole biscuit for 3 dimensional views. Some will get tumbled after sawing in half. Rio's got me into tumbling when I collected here about 4 years ago. I broke most of them up, or collected small ones. This time doing larger biscuits. A collection of varieties. Like one of each. They are easy to tumble. Already rough shaped. So durable in the tumbler. If they survived mother nature to here, the tumbler is gentle in comparison. The tumbler can be filled with hockey puck sized biscuits and rolled together with a minimum of smalls. Nature ground these 5+ pounders without a single impact fracture some how. Those chert ovoids weigh 10-15 pounds and have been ground perfectly. No cracks, and a glass like material. Not sure there is an easier tumble than the Rio's.

I'm sure you needed to catch up on your sleep. It's freakin' Africa hot out there with zero shade!
Looks like ya go south on 83 to FM2098. There is a US Customs location AND a Port of Entry site on that road heading to the dam and Mexican border. No telling if there is a place to pull over to rock hunt from the sat. photos. Just saying that the south shore looks to be rocks. Maybe pull into Falcon Village and see if you can get to the lake from the backside of that housing area? Dam built in 1953 according to Google. Plenty of time for rocks to pile up down there. Dunno if others have tried to hound the area.
Good luck and don't drive too far and end up in Mexico!
ETA: Probably a buttload of Border Patrol in that area!

My Google earth is saying Los Lobos Road, probably same as FM2098. Looks like it flanks high water mark of lake for many miles. Could be another whole zone to collect. Shores look prime for plucking. My smart phone put me on the rocks this time, GE imagery at Dec 2015. Allowed me to see car relative to every little rock exposure. Incredible tool. The only problem I see for the south end is nary a quarry. Permits may not have been issued for mining in that area. Totally possible. You gotta have the caliche to find this stuff. Caliche = quarry's in most cases. The residents of that area could have fought any mining activity. Would be surprised if it is not total caliche. Too close to river. Then again, that is the deep end of the lake and the caliche may be under lake water....

Wow James that back and blue one is neat. May be some relation to Balmorhea Blue agate. The tubey ones like that I've cut all turn out to be golden tubes in clear agate. I like your black and blue much better.
Very humid here in Kerrville today too. Had sprinkles this AM on my way to the range. Supposed to be cranking up thunderstorms this evening. Electric storms not to be taken lightly down there on the flats where you are, so be careful out there. Remember, to lightning, humans are just a big ole bag of water walking around and often the tallest target in the area. Also that caliche can get slicker than deer guts on a doorknob after a rain, even on what seem to be hard surfaces.
Ran into Clayton this AM and asked why he has not been by the house. He said the pollen is so bad at Carrizo Springs on the Rio right now that it made him sick as a dog with allergies. Man he looked and sounded terrible! Had the same thing happen to me couple of years ago at George West and it was miserable......Mel
