I was inspired by rockjunquie's pierce work and came up with this idea to try. The shape came out better then I thought but I think the sheet was too thin. I used 24 gauge and think it would look better in about 20. Chuck

That's a lot of intricate sawing! Is that Drummond Island?
Nice work!

I started with 24g and soon realized that I would need to use 20. Now, I am cutting and etching. The etching eats away at a lot of thickness, so I am ordering some 18 also.

I figured 20 gauge would do the trick but I am guessing $15 to $20 just in material for one this size in 20 gauge. Chuck

Chuck I had to look up the largest. Isle Royale was my guess, but I really didn't know. Drummond Island is only the fourth largest in the Great Lakes though. I really like that pendant. Now you'll have to learn to make one out of pudding stone like your old avatar.

I have an idea for that using silver and stone but getting enough pattern/content in a pudding stone that small is difficult. Never been to Isle Royal. Is it 100% national park or do people own property there? Chuck

I am picturing something like this. The oval will be solid sterling sheet. I would cut out the Drummond island shape and have a pudding stone behind it. Basically a reverse bezel setting. The back would be open showing the back of the stone. Chuck

What if it were a normal bezel set puddingstone pendant with this cut into the back?

What if it were a normal bezel set puddingstone pendant with this cut into the back? The only person that would know about the Drummond shape then is the person wearing it. The drummond shape is just as much in demand as the puddding stone so combining the two elements is the key. Chuck

Chuck I was kidding about making the island out of pudding stone. It would be almost impossible to put that much detail into it without a piece of jasper popping out. Your idea is great though. Those would sell for a lot on the island, I'll bet. Only problem is that the other store there would probably copy it right away. I think Isle Royale is all National Park. I'd love to go there sometime, but my wife is not into wilderness camping. I guess I'll have to go without her.

That is at 22.69 for the one ounce and 3.33 per square in. bought with a 10 oz break.

You've achieved a good level of detail in your piercing. I'd have a small concern about the projections, especially where narrow. Do my eyes deceive me or have you rounded some down to address this? I think this would sit really well on a puddingstone background.

I was just wanting to test myself and also make mine stand out from the rest. I did try to sand and file anything that seemed sharp. Chuck

I've started etching with the pierce work, but I have to step up to 18g since the etchant really takes a bite. I won't be doing any silver at that thickness!
