Hi all, Im a n00b so be patient? 🙂
I was given a smaller Thumler last year, used it once, and put it away. Ended up starting to collect interesting rocks and polish them with the dremel because I enjoy it. But I do have trouble with the final polish with the dremel so I got my tumbler out again.
unfortunately, though I saved the documentation, it is pretty scanty!
I seem to remember the tumbler barrel having a rubber band that went around the top edge, where the lid slips under the rubber top lip. Though I swore I put everything in one place, that was missing, and I wondered if I was misremembering. I tried the tumbler without it and no, it leaked.
So I tried to diy it with several kinds of tight bands at high tension around the barrel (tight) and when I turned the barrel upside down it seemed water tight. But when I actually put it on the tumbler, it leaked and lid came off and spewed stuff everywhere.
I should probably admit here that I was 1) tumbling glass and 2) using a combo of river sand (basically finely crushed rock) and not purchased mix. The tumbler seemed to struggle with the load. I did add some baking soda to lower the potential for gas buildup but who knows? Still I don't think these factors were the core problem...maybe?
Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Welcome to the forum! The Rock Shed carries the rubber o-ring you need. Figure you have a 3 lb barrel. o-ring on this page: therockshed.com/tumbler2.htmlMay want to order an extra drive pulley belt while you are ordering. They sell grit & polish as well should you want. Again, welcome to RTH

Thanks for the info! I guess there is not a way to "hack" one of these? 😉 I am a little short on cash for a few days and naturally impatient (well, I guess that makes me a less than ideal tumbler but...)

You're a fine potential tumbler. Most of us do all kinds of stuff on the cheap to make it work but Capn Bob is right and you do need to buy this stuff. At least the oring seal. Be patient and maybe look again for that O ring. Must be somewhere. A tempprary fix means that when ever you take off the top you would have to make it seal again. Drive you crazy really quickly . Welcome to the forum.

I concur - try not to skimp on the o-ring. I tried it when I was first starting out and ended up with a big mess all over the place. Welcome, btw.

We were given two 3lb. tumblers, one w/o band. Got a 1/4" diameter [the ring material] O-ring that will just slip inside the barrel; barrel inside diameter same as O-ring outside diameter, works great for me. Good auto parts or industrial supply places stock a supply of O-rings.

I'm not sayin its right but my ar-12 barrel has 3 hose clamps end to end around that ring that sticks out that the lid goes in.

The above eBay listing is for the drive pulley o-ring, not the o-ring that is for the lid of the 3 lb barrel. I don't use the 3 lb Thumler's barrels, so it is possible that the same o-ring works for both uses, but I wouldn't count on it without knowing for sure.

On the subject of avatars, jamesp, if that gator gets any closer, I'm gonna have to put one between his eyes. I may already be too late.

But close enough for even I to see. They don't take well to powerful ammunition. Hunters use small calibers to avoid massive damage. Like a direct shot from a 44 blows them slap in half. But their skin can deflect glancing trajectory.

I had the same trouble and it took too much time to find belts that worked correctly. It's easier to just get it from the rock shed. I was lucky and found a sweeper belt that worked. A different barrel needed the same size Oring but couldn't find anymore sweeper belts that worked. The rock shed was the answer. If you are lucky enough to find the right size, it might save you a buck or two but the shed is easier. First, get it working right then try to find a cheaper replacement o-ring.
Trying to save a buck is not worth the hassle.

My motivation to get the O-ring at the local parts house/industrial supply wasn't to "save a buck"; it was far more handy for me. I came right by the place on my way home from work.

They used to sock me 10 bucks for a special cupped o ring for a fertilizer injector from the manufacturer. Checked a hydraulic place locally and bought 10 for under a buck.

South Georgia needs to back off on gator protection and open the season more. Okeefenokee Swamp for instance. It's overpopulated.
