I have built a tumbler and now I'm really for the for the motor and pully sizes. So, my questions are : 1. What is the best barrel size? 2. Long with the rpm's?
Been looking through old articles and the rpm and barrel size varies.

If you have built a tumbler as you said, why are you asking about barrel size? Barrel size largely dependent on size and quantity of rock to process. Speed of barrel dependent on size, and to a degree desired roughing method desired; jamesp has this pretty well worked out.

Been looking through old articles and the rpm and barrel size varies. Find a 1750-1100 rpm motor spice. NOT 3600 RPM. Choose a barrel. You gotta have the motor -speed- and the barrel -size- first. Got to, no choice in matter. Once you have those two items the fun begins, not till then. Even better if you have the shaft size. It plays a huge role. 1 inch shaft will turn barrel twice as fast as a 1/2 inch shaft. Shaft size counts . Why not order a 12 or 15 pound Thumler's barrel and be done with it. They are well made. Measure it's diameter and let all know.

There is math to be done. Every diameter in the mix will change the barrel RPM motor RPM shaft diameter barrel diameter motor pulley diameter shaft pulley diameter If any of those change like adding rubber hose to the shafts then the barrel RPM changes I went the safe route and let Lortone figure it out. I asked on here how may RPM'S a stock lortone tumbler runs at in each size and then used that as my staring point. I have never regretted that choice. I also prefer Lortone barrels. Have over twenty of them and have been running about 5 years with ZERO failures. Never so much as drip from any barrels. I cheated and created an excel document that did the pulley math for me. There is a supply store the has every size motor know to man. I can make PVC barrels many different sizes. I'm making my own because things are not like they used to be, for me. The cheaper way out. Just trying to find out the best barrel size and RPMs Sorry about all the hassle.

Before you start building, give thought to how much rock you plan to tumble and how big the pieces are. If you have a bucket of stuff no bigger than ping-pong balls, don't build a tumbler with a 5-gallon barrel. As far as PVC barrels being "the cheap way out", I disagree, they are fine, and quite durable. The speed of the barrel is dependent on the size, slower as the barrel gets larger. I set 6" PVC barrels up to run ~28 R.P.M., seems to be a good average for roughing and finishing.
No hassle, this stuff is a lot of what the forum is all about.
