Well, tracking paid off. I went to run another batch of glass and obsidian and couldn't remember how long I ran it in each phase. With a quick flip through my tracking sheets, I found the listing for my previous run and now i know when to check! By the way, anyone else name their barrels, supposedly to help with tracking phases? Mine are: R2 C3P0 Price Tag (it is still on the barrel) Skywalker Jedi Gee, do ya think I might be a movie fan...?

I use Excel, keep track of the date, time, what I did and any little comments I might have noticed about the rocks. I think it's a good idea to keep a record, especially for newbies, it's been helpful to me. I also have a page for "Suggestions" that I've picked up from the forum here. Llana,, You said you are kinda cramped for room to have a dry eraser board. I played around with an idea and it works pretty good. Make your chart on a piece of paper the size you want. I just used a black pen. Using clear wide shipping tape, tape your chart onto a piece of thin wood, stiff cardboard, plexiglass or something else that meets your fancy. Make sure that when you tape the chart on to it's backboard you get the tape on with no wrinkels or bubbles and wrap it around the edge of the backboard. Buy a black thinline felt marker that IS NOT a permanent marker and you can write on your new dry eraser board!! You "may" have to use a tad of Windex or other light cleaner to erase the board but som markers will just rub off with an old rag or paper towel. I just now thought of this. You can also buy a small plastic clipboard and tape your chart on it.Or,,,if you can find a white one you can make the chart using a permanent marker and do your writing with the unpermant marker?? LOL Is that a word??LOL Ewwwww,The memory banks are running full ahead. If you can get a piece of window glass you can write on it too. Now you really got me thinkin',,,,, Hope I don't burn out the ole memory banks!! LOL What were we talkin' about?? Oh yea,,,fixing a broken window!! LOL Hope this helps ya a little,,, Tom

Tom, since I have the computer on most of the time when I am home, I have a "tumbling log". So far, it has worked pretty good - except, of course, when I forget to update it! But that would probably happen no matter what method I used. That CRS disease, ya' know! ;D
I do have my barrels marked or named, but nothing near as creative as Skipper! I have CA & B - my 6 lb. coarse barrels, and C1, C2, C3, C4 - my 3 lb. coarse barrels. PP1 and PP2, my pre-polish barrels and a new 6 lb and 3 lb. barrel for polish that I haven't marked yet. Guess I need to name them something really catchy. And, of course, Vibe for the vibrating tumbler, which is out of commission right now. One of the screws broke that holds the motor and it starting making a monsterous noise, more so than unusal. I unscrewed the other screws to clean and check what was the problem, then unscrewed the shaft and BOOM, the entire motor fell off! Going to have to order a couple of parts, then do some major surgery on it. Just call me llana, the tumbler surgeon! ;D

My tumbler is "The Vibe" If I ever get more, I'll have to think out of the box, I suppose cookie

For now I'm using a wall calendar just for my tumbling notes. I'm also taking digital pictures of the rocks in the different polishing steps in order to get an idea of how the whole process visually looks. About the barrels; I only have 2 barrels and one of them have a circle marked on it's bottom, that one is being used exclusively for the coarse step. My second barrel is used for the rest, but I just ordered an extra barrel to serve as a final polishing barrel only. I will probably change my methods as I gain more experience.
