I am curious... What does heat treating flint yield? Never heard of it (in my 10 whole months in this hobby. Lol!).
I have a few flint slabs purchased awhile back from Stoneage Industries, and they look great as is - like yours does. Sometime after the Christmas Holidays I plan on creating a few cabs (hand cabbing with dremel and SiC wet/dry sandpapers). Never worked it before, so this thread interests me. Thank you.

Wow, those are excellent slabs! I'm so happy! All the colors, banding and patterns from the quartz, always reminds me of Fall here.
Can't wait to see the results of your heat treating experiment!

Those are beautiful Andrea! I'm with the others - I think they are fine cabbing material just like they are but I also understand the desire to experiment and learn.
Another thing I would look for is if they become more brittle due to the heating process. I have some similar material and I don't know if it's been heated or not now that I see yours. I do know it's pretty crackily and hard to get good sized cabochon pieces.

These are a couple of cabs I made a while back that I just assumed they had been heated. Now that I see how colorful yours are I'm not so sure anymore. The veins of agate running through flint are just downright beautiful.   |

Those colors are great the way they are! Larry C. Yellows may go red. Could ruin it! Andrea, try a torch on cutoff pieces first. Just to get a taste of what happens. You don't need full thickness heat treatment like the knappers. You only want surface color. I have done that very successfully with a propane torch on finished goods. Will illustrate with Ohio flint and Jeannie's cabs. |
