I asked about this stuff about two months ago, and I am DONE. I will never attempt this again! The quartz in the stone polishes great! The rest, only get about a shiney as you see here. After trying three different polishes. Ending with tin oxide. This is before This is after. Did you ever get to the point that you are just sick of looking at a rock? That's were I have arrived with this stuff! All I might add, is, it was a learning experience.

Hey Banjo, you did a great job on them! They look really nice, good pics too. That looks nothing like the kind of rhyolite I've seen. It is really tough rock, most flintknappers stay away from it because of its hardness. The few guys I know who chip it make some beautiful things with it though. The rhyolite I've seen is a green color and from North carolina. Again, great job on a tough stone, cheers, Don

Thanks for the kind words and encouragement. Many a day I contemplated using these as slingshot projectiles, and move on. I was seeing these stupid things in my sleep. I think I am ill, I rather do this than {oh never mind} most anything. Adios, from AZ, where it is 94 degrees right now.

I know you posted that those rocks were Rhyolite, however, after looking in my rock book they look alot like Rhodochrosite, by any chance have you broke one open? You might find a nice surpize in it.

Yep; Busted them open and it was just solid swirls of quartz, with some patterning. Sometimes they are all clumpped together like grapes. But further up the hill is where I ran into abunch of agate that was more worth my time. It was an experiment, and I learned, and thats good enough for me. ;D

I was just curious because the Rhyolite that I found in my book is a bandeed stone similar to bloodstone. Tami

looks like you have one that is sphered - did you do that or did it tumble into a perfect circle?

Hey Banjo. I did a load of rocks for some friends of mine in Surprise, Arizona a few months ago. They didn't know what they were and neither did I. I ended up throwing them all out after wasting way too much time and resources on them. I just kept one to show them why they don't have more. I didn't recognize them at first, probably because I've been trying so hard to forget them! Ron

Scroll back up and take a look at the rough photo. A lot of the rough is spherical, and it really looks alot better once it is wacked in half. But some of the balls came out kind of cool. The large ball is my daughters favorite.
