I reuse acetone for soaking things in the small jar I have. It's true the acetone will melt seals, but I have a heavy duty seal on an old pesto jar that has been holding up a long time. And, yeah- it evaporates fast. Place it in your garage of something and leave it open. It'll be gone in no time.
eta- I go through a lot of it, so I buy a big can from the hardware store, keep it outside and refill smaller amounts into an old finger nail polish removal jar for use inside.

Lots of people swear by acetone for cleaning rocks prior to dopping or gluing. I use isopropyl alcohol, but that's because I get it free.

Dropping a room temp rock in boiling water will almost certainly do exactly nothing. 200°F is nothing.
Give it a go on scraps and see for yourself
Rocks didn't last as long as they did by being super fragile.

I've had room temp pyrex items shatter on me with only boiling water added - rare, but it's happened to me twice. Most likely due to an imperfection or flaw in the dish. Granted, pyrex is not a rock, but it's designed for heat just the same. Most rocks, I agree, would be no issue. However, Murphy has a funny way of presenting himself every now and then.

I haven't read thru all the posting so this may have already be said. The acetone might not be getting down into the cracks. Remove rock from acetone a scrap off loose glue with exacto knife, Then continue soaking. Repeat that cycle until it comes loose.

I've used a small paint brush to baste the contact points w/ acetone, just cuz I wasn't patient enough to wait for the soak. Also used putty knives to poke and gently "Pry". Patience Grasshopper!

I'm glad also that things seem to be loosening. Does anyone know whether CabStar aluminum dop sticks are still available anywhere? Those had holes drilled in them that allowed the solvent to get behind the dop head into the center and loosen from both the outside and inside. Worked faster. I can't find an active online link for those, however.

I just found that using the brush every now and then exposed fresh CA to fresh acetone, just goosing the process a bit. I choose a dull putty knife over the exacto due to not having thumbs and putty knife being less lethal.

This morning, the two pieces were still glued together, so I basted with a brush. The brush bristles were able to go between the two pieces, so I hope that will hurry up the process a bit. Will check in the morning.
Solvent arrived today. BTW Satellite City ca glues start to melt at about 330 degrees F.

Yippee! The last two pieces separated --- only took 5 days! Glad I have the solvent now, and hope I only make little mistakes with the glue. Sometimes it is best to go back and redo a small mistake instead of going forward "fixing" it, and fixing the fix --- and making a bigger mess. I appreciate all the help. Thanks!

PatIn class we have been putting CA glued items we need seperate into the sand for preheating cabs to be dopped. 3-4 minutes and the different expansion rates destroy the glue physically. Then the glue is sanded/scraped off.

NRG Scott, would you describe your sand setup? Thanks.

NRG Scott, would you describe your sand setup? Thanks. It's a pie tin full of sand sitting on a hot plate. Pretty basic and simple. It's probably 150-160° ETA The freezer did not work. And the sand is used to seperate steel screws from the stone.
