Found this stone in the desert here in Nevada and cracked it open to see what the inside looks like. Interesting purple inclusions.

That is interesting. Never know what one will find on the inside.

vegasjames: Is that typical of the whole deposit or is the item pictured a one-off? It's very striking material. I can't make out a crystal structure of the purple material from your image but the occurrence is very interesting.

I discounted fluorite because of the deposition in what seems to be a chert or flint. That isn't typical for fluorite but I might be wrong. It's usually associated with igneous rocks.

No clue what it is, but anytime anyone finds something purple it's a total score!

Occasionally find sea fossils out there as well. Lots of chalcedony in thee area along with a lighter purple banded quartz and some feldspar. But everything is very scattered over the area, not in deposits. This is only piece like this I found.

No clue what it is, but anytime anyone finds something purple it's a total score! I find purple all the time. Purple jaspers, purple opals, purple banded quartz and further north all sorts of fluorospar (fluorite) and Nevada Tiffany stone that often has dark purple.
Here are some examples.
Fluorospar
Nevada Tiffany stone
Purple jaspers
All the big rocks around Jax are purple jasper.
This is a purple jasper fulgurite

If you get up to Vegas let me know. There is a big purple jasper deposit just outside of Las Vegas and purple agate nearby in a few areas I have heard of but have not gone to. I mainly go for copper ores and garnet bearing stones myself, which I prefer.

vegasjames, is that fulgurite most likely from a lighting strike, or was it in an area where electrical lines could have come down? I've read about them, but never have seen one that I know of. Thanks for sharing.

Love, love, love copper ores and garnets, too (and purple). We're only 3 hrs. from Vegas -- me and hubby need to have a field trip day to meet up with you.

Thanks for sharing. There are no electrical lines in the area. It is from a lightening strike. In this pic you can see the core:

What a neat find, and that's a great photo. We were taught to look for them if we believed a wildland fire may have been caused by downed lines, so that's why I asked. Thanks.
