It is a more inexpensive service similar to flat rate boxes. From Atlanta any way. I am very surprised at how much cheaper it is. Shipping calculated by zone. pirateship.com is best used to get shipping costs and it will send will command your printer to do a label and store your addresses and is free. The post office is rarely advertises this 'Cubic' service. The post office has a whole array of boxes for this category. For instance this is the 'Cubic' SFRB. It is taller than a SFRB too. I have shipped over 2o times all over US using this larger box and it was cheaper than a SFRB every time. They were heavy. She ordered the Cubic boxes thru the post office with their free delivery. But used pirateship for advise on which boxes to get. pirateship.com gives you quotes on all choices, makes the whole process easier. Sent about 10 pounds in a 8x8x8 for less than $7 to Missouri.

Thanks! I just ordered some boxes and didn't see those. I wonder if you are a test market?

I just looked into it and it says for high volume shippers. I'm assuming that it really doesn't matter?

OK- I see. The box isn't a special cubic box. It's the regular priority box. (not SFRB)

Thank you for this, jamesp! My sister and I send stuff to each other across the country and this will really help. Just received a box from her on Friday and she paid $30 in postage. I'm going to share this with her.
rockjunquie - I was reading up on the Cubic and it's a "secret" service that isn't available at the post office. There's even a softpak cubic for poly and padded envelopes. Perfect for shipping your jewelry!

OK- I see. The box isn't a special cubic box. It's the regular priority box. (not SFRB) It is a service called cubic and I have sent out in 3 different small sizes and all were way cheaper tham FRB. Yes it varies with zone but still way cheaper. It is called 'Cubic'. Not openly advertised by the post office. Better to get your quotes on the internet from a 3rd party site like pirateship.com and print it at home. Some postal workers seem perplexed as if they did not know the service existed. Don't trust the post office. I'm not high volume. Average 6 per week.... I am using the SFRB's for packing material because that larger box in the photo is always cheaper than the SFRB. It is costing in packing material for smaller orders that do not fill the box lol.

Sounds like a good deal, especially if we can use the free Priority boxes (which already have the cubic capacity printed on them: the ODCUFT number). Added: I see there are only 6 of the free boxes that qualify... - O-1096LX (.1 cubic foot rate) - also qualifies as the Large Video box which ships internationally at same price as Small FR
- O-BOX4X (.2 cubic foot rate)
- O-1097X (.2 cubic foot rate)
- O-1092X (.3 cubic foot rate)
- O-1095X (.4 cubic foot rate)
- OSHOEBOX (.4 cubic foot rate)
Otherwise, you have to use your own boxes with the correct cubic foot capacity. Though the pirateship site does offer links to ebay and etsy accounts, I wonder if/when Paypal and others who are already basing their postage methods and prices on Commercial Plus pricing will add these options? I noticed in the past that a couple other shipping services that integrated with selling sites such as ebay and offered this service have since disappeared, which is why I wondered.

cubic is for large volume shippers (>50,000 annually) so if Pirate ship becomes the third party shipper (basically aggregating all us small persons) Just wonder what happens in the instance that you need an insurance claim?
Might be moot for most, USPS rate of successful deliveries is pretty high, so just write off the odd one and move on, but if you're shipping high $, might be a consideration.

jamesp Thanks so much for turning us onto PirateShip. I didn't immediately start using it. I was lazy and etsy labels was easier, but for the last year and a half I've mostly used PirateShip and saved a ton of money! I also LOVE the paste feature. Saves me tying in all those fields. For overseas- I consistently save money.

Looking at Inxeption for freight. $100/month membership fee but they committed to $200 any where in the country up for to 400 pounds on a standard 40 x 48 pallet. That would cut cost of the bigger sized pit shipments via freight from an average cost to ship of $330 unit. I have not tried them yet... They have partnered with UPS and some other LTL's. Freight is bad. I pay $330 for 4' x 4' space, a high volume company pays $500 for 8' X 25' with much heavier freight(~1000 mile ave.) !

I'm going to have to look into it, once we're settled in at the new place shipping may become a big part of my life.

Cubic offers lots of box sizes in the range of standard flat rate S-M-LFRB. You can also ship in your own boxes if they meet cubic criteria(like one dimension has to be 6 inches ?, along with other required dimensions, I can't remember exactly). Wife and I are exhausted. Corona sent out a wave of interest in fire pits. Wife and I have shipped over 120 pits out in the past 30 days. Rate increasing, grrr.
