Rob I've been admiring this bowl since you posted, it is such a beautiful piece. As James stated the contrast is so eye catching. What an awesome bowl!
As far as selling, here's my 2¢ worth... I've been in this hobby for over 10 yrs and haven't sold a piece yet. I enjoy the hobby and don't want to "have" to do it. I can bounce around to different projects with no time constraints. Enjoy the hobby. If a sale eventually comes from it, all the better.

Next step is a 'passive' machine that will do most of the work for you. A 110VAC 1/4 HP gearbox drive on a swing arm with a 5" to 7" convex diamond wheel spinning slow at say 100 RPM with a simple depth stop. Drop it down on the rock and walk away. By morning you should have a fine divot in your stone. You could move the stone a bit, adjust the end stop, and widen the divot to one side for character (instead of a single round divot, make a kidney shape). Could be fabricated out of wood. Garden hose drip preferable. Then all you have to do is 50-100-200-400-800-1500-3000 using convex pads. This is a 55 RPM gearbox drive with a small 1/4 HP motor. It would not take much to attach a sprocket as a flange and mount the convex diamond wheel to the gearbox shaft. Am I talking greek to you ? I am good machine builder. This one a heck of a lot simpler than most, just saying. I believe I could build this machine using mostly wood in 2 to 3 days. It should last many years.

The tombstone guys do the same thing similar here in Georgia. The guy has a giant saw and has a 5' X 5' X 10' block of granite delivered and dropped on his saw table. Water drip. He turns his 'passive' saw on and cuts manageable 3 inch/4 inch slabs off of the block and cuts them to tombstone shapes and then engraves them. Saw runs over night while he is asleep. Key word 'asleep'.

I understand what you're saying jamesp, but I would need some help with a build like that. The problem with doing it while I sleep is that my neighbors might not appreciate NOT sleeping. As it is, I worry that I'm going to irritate the whole neighborhood when I make a bowl. The grinding with the hard cup wheel is particularly loud. I do my work during a week day before five so that at least some people will be at work. That particular wheel wouldn't work because it's not threaded and there is no cutting surface at the lowest point. The nut would stick out there. But, I get the idea with the right wheel. I can see where after several drops of the grinder, I could just go back in and clean up the intersection points to make a smooth, interesting shaped bowl. I wonder how much extra wear there would be on the grinder compared to chiseling it out first.

I wonder how much extra wear there would be on the grinder compared to chiseling it out first. It may run quieter than you think. It is a high probability build the way I see it. But the noise level would be a gamble. Just the 10,000 rpm finish work is a lot of noise for a neighborhood. It is a project I would like to tackle, a type machine I am familiar with building. It would be nice if it had an adjustable pattern that could be adjusted to the silhouette of the rock. The bowls are awesome. I sure like machines like kilns and tumblers that work while you sleep.

I personally would love to have a bowl like that to display. I had to do some searching to find something even semi-similar to your bowl, but here's a link with some pricing of their stuff. Yours is way better in my opinion.

I really like that bowl. I can see making a bathroom sink out of something like that. Thanks for sharing!
