Do we want to upgrade to large flat rate box? I’ll pay the diff for those who don’t want to at this point if it’s that full. I think there is only 5 of you left to go. True.. it just sounds like it is busting at the seams. I know that there are 4 left including myself. One person dropped out. If it is needed to upgrade to a large flat rate, please do it, and I will reimburse the difference between the med/flat for anyone who wants it. Just PM me if so. I'm open to whatever really.

Box arrived yesterday. (I think it was probably delayed by the snow in the Sierra Nevada, lots of pass closures these last few days.) Opened it this morning. Whee! In addition to selecting what I want and what is to be put in, I'm going to re-bag and re-label some stuff. Bags are already coming apart (to be expected.) I'll put labels on paper as a lot of what was written on bags is becoming obscured. One thing for sure, I'll take the other 50mil bill, since this is the closest I'll ever be to being a millionaire. Goal is to have it back out on Tuesday. Thursday at the very latest. Argh Do we want to upgrade to large flat rate box? I’ll pay the diff for those who don’t want to at this point if it’s that full. I was going to say it's not how full it is, it's just that plastic bags sont hold up well to rock. But I guess if it was less full, things could be wrapped up more. But I certainly don't have any issue with just re-bagging. Can I vote on this when I've finalized what I want to put in? I've got some slabs and slabettes I think folks might enjoy, but they don't take much room and haven't really decided on rough yet.

Sure man, whatever you want to do. If you think however that the box would benefit from a size upgrade I'm happy to compensate you the difference, is all I'm saying.

Seems at the beginning of this thread sentiment was to keep it to a MFRB.
I'm on the fence here, so would love to hear from remaining participants on the list.
I was thinking of throwing in some lovely mahogany obsidian with lots of sheen and cool banding. Trouble is, most of it is a bit larger than easy tumble size, and this would require a bigger box. I'm fine with that, what are others' thoughts?

After rearranging some of the slabs and taking out a lot of dead cardboard I easily found room to add slabs - BUT - there is still a lot of rearranging and consolidating that can be done if someone has time or patience - the prior of which I had very little. The half of the box that is stuffed is the bags of tumbles and we need someone to pull a big bag out and start tumbling I have a five gallon bucket full of rough tumbles and would definitely have put some in the box but I didn't because there was no space and it would have just been me trading a bag for a bag if that makes sense. I don't tumble rough rock like that - or at least I haven't in a very long time.

Gotta admit, I haven't taken much tumble material. A few miscelaneous pieces and a few apache tears, but those are so cool I want to leave some for others. I'll look through again and see what else catches my fancy.

TommyNo need to leave it medium to save cost - I'll cover that cost difference. I will take minimal cabs - so I def am hoping there is tumbling material left by the time it makes it to me. I'm willing to pay the differences so people can put stuff in and we aren't hampered. There is really no reason not to upgrade the box size except cost, correct? Am I missing something? Grant

I have no dog in the hunt so whatever you guys want to do. I was just making the point that the box isn't coming apart at the seams - we just need some tumblers to help themselves to make some room. I think previous boxes were upgraded to large and if I remember right I might have been one of the ones who did the upgrade. Luminin is the keeper of the contest so maybe he'll weigh in.

Sorry for the radio silence on my part! If a larger box is needed, then it's needed.
Cost is 95% of the concern, though we DO have those that can't physically lift a MFRB and thus must disassemble it bit by bit. That said, if all of those remaining have no qualms with a size upgrade, I say go for it! TBH, I choose to start with a medium because; That's what was used before I took over and it also leaves us with room to grow.
Start with the large and we're in a more expensive pinch when we need to upsize... Which so far has come up pretty much always...
Sometimes someone can be convinced to take some extra, or members prove how good they are at 3D packing puzzles and manage to make a MFRB work like Mary Poppins' carpet bag.
TL;DR - If everyone that hasn't went yet is cool with it, move up to a LFRB!

I think fernwood has the most concern about this. What say you, Beth?

Did this box start with you Luminin - and was it already stocked with items? I'm trying to understand how the whole process works in terms of what is added and what is taken.

The box started with me, fully stocked. Each person takes and adds to it, slowly shuffling the material. At the end, the box returns to me and then after I do some shuffling of my own, it starts again! It's a great way for everyone to get ahold of material they may not have access to, even if it's just to see it in person sometimes.

The seeing it in person is awesome. I also photographed and saved for future reference, as most of the contents were labeled.

I agree with Beth. Some of what was in the box I might never have seen in person otherwise. I'll definitely participate again next time.

Finally got it back on the road. Here's what I took out: And put in: The blue-green is a slab from a rock in a box I bought from someone here, don't recall who. Seller called it some type of blue agate, looks like granite to me, but again I don't know squat. The Montana (incorrectly labelled Clackamas River in the photo, correctly labelled in the box) is a slice from one I bought here, I think from drocknut. The remainder is self collected. The Richardson egg isn't a slab - it's the heel off an end that had most of the matrix removed when I found it. The white lacy-lookin' one is from Wendover, UT. The yellow agate is from south of Middlegate, NV. The other 4 slabs/slabettes are from near Slate Mountain, about 30 miles se of Fallon, NV. (Perhaps surprisingly, all found within about a 600 yard radius.) The obsidian is from Glass Butte, OR. All mahogany type coloring, but each piece has lovely sheen showing. Apologies for the poor cuts - I have a trim saw I put a vise on, but still very difficult for me to get good, smooth cuts by hand! Thanks so much for the opportunity to participate in this! ETA: If anyone makes cabs from any of these, I'd love to see them! Argh 2nd ETA: I just realized there is another slabette labelled Slate Mt that I didn't get into the photo. Yellow jasper/agate mix with a sort of mossy texture to it.

arghvark. The “blue granite “ is Lawsonite. I bought some from the same seller. That was quite a story!! Vendor was Kris of handtomouthmining. On this forum.

That wasn't who I puchased the box from (although it may be where it came from originally), and wasn't how it was labelled!

Received the box late yesterday afternoon! I was just starting dinner, so I haven't even opened it yet. I have a meeting this morning, so if all goes well I'll be able to open it and peek inside this afternoon.
Just an FYI - it may take me a few days to get it back on the road. We're bracing for a huge storm that will start tonight and last through Friday. We could get up to 2 feet of snow out of this one! I will be on shovel patrol tomorrow and Friday to keep up with it.
