I like the one about the bolt. When on the way to Viet Nam in 1970, after Hawaii stop and heading to Okinawa, I was given an outside seat by two people who had been there before, so no big deal watching the ocean go by. I could see the top of the wing pretty well, and noticed a "lump" coming up above one engine mount. It turned out to be a bolt coming out. Mentioned it to the guys next to me, they looked and got a bit pale. The flight was on a commercial airliner [gov't ferried lots of people on them] so when the stewardess came by I told her "This thing is shedding parts". She said "What" so I told her a bolt was coming out and showed where it was. "Oh, probably nothing", but a minute or so later co-pilot came back for a look, "well it won't let the engine fall off, it will be OK". " We can fly minus one engine anyway." Shortly after, the bolt fell away so I figured how long it took for it to hit the ocean and told the guys next to me, they got a little more pale. We landed in Okinawa for fuel and a stretch break and before I got off the plane there was a ladder by the wing and a couple people looking at the hole. It was dark then, don't know if they replaced it or not.
