Didn't get to go out doing an real rock/fossil collecting last year and starting to hear the siren calls of "Shark teeth.... Geodes..." etc. Hoping to go for a trip this spring, depending partly on what happens with my car when I have it looked at in a couple weeks. (Hoping to get it inspection/trip worthy for under $600... might be more like $1000. If it can be fixed.) LOVE to drive that car. ('04 Monte Carlo SS.) Motor, transmission great, it's the body and various parts that take a beating with these roads and salt.
Anyway, I want shark teeth the most. Must. Have. Fossilized. Shark. Teeth. But my mother will want to visit distant relatives, which we should do, because my mother is getting older and I don't know how much longer we'll be able to go on these long trips.
But I must have fossilized shark teeth! Trying to fit the two together and feeling guilty and selfish for wanting to do that. I just found out the other day that my mother doesn't like caves. Do you know how many caves I have dragged my poor mother to/through?

My favorite spot is Westmoreland State Park on the northern neck of Virginia and the property next door, Stratford Hall. I can hear my mother now... "But we've BEEN to those places!"

A friend of mine lives south of me here in Venice, FL and she is always posting photos on Facebook of the shark's teeth she finds at the beaches there (and she isn't a rock or fossil hound either) Here is a link to an article about it: www.visitsarasota.com/article/authentic-florida-venice-shark-tooth-capital-worldYour Mom like Florida? Sunshine? Blue skies? sugar white sand? Best wishes that you get your wishes!

oh yes, Venice Beach is famous! Have never actually been there, but got some nice little teeth in pretty colors at Manasota Key once. Unfortunately, our Florida relatives moved back north. ;(

How about North Florida, there are locations that are close to Georgia.

Oh, when I said they moved back north, I meant New York state. Looks like Westmoreland is out, BUT may be able to get in some VA/MD or possibly NC sites, if they are easy enough to get access to.
I brought my car in this morning for a pre-inspection inspection so some of our options may change depending on what they find. The state has made the inspection process so complex and difficult now that it is hard for an old car like mine to pass even if it is running well. They actually said on the news, "Well, most people just get a new car." What a stupid thing to say! Why have all this intense inspection, you may ask? Supposedly to prevent pollution. Yet how much more pollution is generated and resources used every time a new car is built?

OK how about Maryland for sharks teeth, Chesapeake Bay beach hunting. We always went to Brownie beach, Science Cliffs (Calvert Cliffs) and have stayed at these very, very rustic cabins Matoaka Cabins (there is a holiday inn nearby if these are to rustic). Also other beaches nearby to hunt. This is Southern Maryland, not much to do but the bay is very pretty here with the cliffs, all kinds of fossils to find including the shark teeth. Also close enough to do a day trip to Washington, D.C.

Have you fossil hunted at Matoaka Cabins? Is it pretty easy access? Cool stuff to be found?
Years ago I went to Brownie's even though the tide was quite high I did some wading around and found some neat little teeth, a tiny fossilized vert, and I think that's where I found my 7-gill shark tooth. (I'll have to look in the case to find out.) Also I found one white shark tooth. Huh, I thought, that's odd.
I put the best finds in a small Riker case and showed them to someone who knew what he was talking about.
I said, "I found all these black and grey ones and then this white one. What's the story with that?" Him: "Well, that's recent." Me: "Like from the last glaciation?" Him: "No, like it fell out of a shark's face yesterday." Me: "YOU MEAN THERE'S SHARKS THERE?!"
Haha, it had never occurred to me that there might STILL be sharks there!
That was a good spot... wonder if I can get that into the trip...

Yes we have stayed and hunted at the Matoaka cabins. It was years ago. They are beach front. The beach and grounds are very nice, the owner planted all sorts specialty trees if I remember correctly. There is a flight of stairs down to the beach because ithe cabins are on top of cliff. You may be able to pay a fee to use the beach for the day. The fossils are the same as at brownies.
I always had the best luck at Breezy point park finding teeth but it is not as pretty as the others. I have also found Native American points at breezy point.

Yes, I think you can fossil hunt at Matoaka Cabins for a modest fee. A few flights of stairs are fine, but steep or long climbs are out because my mother is having a problem with her leg.
I didn't know anything about Breezy Point park... I'll have to look it up, and doubtless will be back with more questions.
Do you know about any fossil locations on the east side of the Chesapeake?

I don't know of any fossil locations of the other side of the Chesapeake. I have just been to the ones I mentioned as they were an easy day trip from where we lived in Maryland.

I have never been there but you may look into Sharktooth Hill, near Bakersfield, Ca.They dig up many fossils including megalodon teeth. There's some digging restrictions but I'm not familiar with them.

I have been to the commercial dig site in Bakersfield. Didn't find anything spectacular, but did find some decent makos, and some cool tiny teeth (dogfish shark, and I think whale shark, among others). Do be aware, there ARE rattlesnakes there, so use caution when poking around.
