Hi folks! I have been hunting around for info on fossil hunting in eastern MD and came across a document that stated a contract had been awarded for the dredging of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal from St. Georges Delaware to Chesapeake City, MD. I don't understand contract-speak, but it sounds like this work would be finishing up this month, March 2019? Anybody know about this? Where the spoil piles would be and if there would be any access? Sounds like a great opportunity... maybe?

From what I understand this is just done to make the canals deeper so not sure they would actually remove anything from it or use it to build the banks up

Found the contract information
I dont see where they listed the dump site
The army corps owns a dump site Pearce Creek Dredged Material Containment Facility and it will probably go there

Pretty sure they remove it. I know there are productive spoil piles near Delaware City from prior C&D dredgings, but I don't know if the stretch they are working on now has any fossils or where they would put the piles -- would they haul them all the way to the are with the current (old, used to be productive but now depleted)piles? I hope somebody on here knows, 'cause it sounds like fun!

Yes, I saw that. Not sure if it relates to the spoil from this particular dredging--? Thought their reasoning for shutting off access from public lands was pretty stupid... to paraphrase, "The danger is somebody could get lost in there and it would take time to get rescue equipment in there." It's 200 acres, not the Great Dismal Swamp!

Goatgrinder, I have problems with the Fossil Forum. A long time ago I signed up for it and posted a few things, then forgot all about the site. Was so long ago that I don't remember my user name or password, etc. finally I gave up on trying to remember what it was, so tried to sign up again. It wouldn't let me, because it said I was already registered, but since I couldn't remember my user name or password, so... nothing doing.

I didnt understand their reasoning either, but it is the Army Corp so they could have other reasons for it and just made something up
